In an unexpected development, Immutable's flagship web3 game Gods Unchained has been removed from the Epic Games Store, following "Adults Only" (AO) rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). The game, initially well-received upon its June launch, is now at the center of a controversy highlighting the challenges of integrating blockchain games onto traditional gaming platforms. Epic Games, known for its diverse library of 1,548 titles, including popular ones like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto 5, typically accommodates "Mature" rated games. However, the Adults Only rating places Gods Unchained in a more restricted category, limiting its audience to individuals aged 18 and above. Interestingly, this decision is not based on conventional concerns like nudity or violence but is connected to the innovative Play-to-Earn (P2E) crypto features.
The Adults Only rating is a direct result of the game's incorporation of cryptocurrency elements, enabling players to earn $GODS Tokens during gameplay. These tokens can be traded for Ethereum and used to acquire web3 Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) representing in-game cards. The integration of blockchain technology and the monetization of in-game assets for cryptocurrency are crucial elements in the gaming experience, leading to the unexpected rating and subsequent removal from the Epic Games Store. Developers are actively appealing the ESRB's decision, expressing a commitment to promptly reinstating the game on the Epic Games Store. As the appeal process unfolds, broader questions arise about the future of blockchain games on established web2 gaming platforms. The intricate convergence of cryptocurrency, NFTs, and gaming prompts a reevaluation of how mainstream platforms adapt to the expanding realm of web3, particularly those incorporating Play-to-Earn dynamics.
Despite this negative news, Immutable Games recently announced that in-game content for Gods Unchained is now available to Amazon Prime Gaming members. As part of the collaboration, Prime Gaming members who connect their in-game accounts will gain monthly access to exclusive in-game items. This announcement also coincides with the Season 2 launch of Gods Unchained, aptly named "Far Horizons." The new season ushers in a host of fresh God Powers to shake up the meta, visual enhancements, and a major expansion set known as "Tides of Fate.” Expanding Horizons will enable players to choose from the three new God Powers heading into the game, which will have a fundamental impact on the Gods Unchained gameplay.
The removal of Gods Unchained from Epic's extensive gaming ecosystem underscores the challenges and complexities associated with introducing innovative blockchain features into traditional gaming spaces. As the gaming industry evolves, the adaptation of mainstream platforms to the expanding world of web3 gaming, especially those featuring Play-to-Earn elements, becomes a critical focal point observed with interest by industry enthusiasts and stakeholders alike.
