In a strategic move to address ownership concerns in PC gaming, Ultra has revealed its debut tradable game, "Josh Journey: Darkness Totems." This signals a shift towards true ownership, with Ultra leading the way in tokenizing PC games. The initiative aims to tackle the prevailing issue of PC gamers lacking genuine ownership of their purchased content. Currently, users are confined to individual licenses, providing limited control. Ultra's approach involves transforming these licenses into digital tokens on their platform, ensuring users have complete ownership rights. Co-CEO, Nicolas Gilot, emphasized the importance of this move, stating: "For mainstream PC gamers, true ownership isn't a pressing issue until it is. Recent history shows digital content can be removed at short notice. Ultra's tokenization ensures user control over their libraries amid industry changes."
Ultra describes itself as the first-of-its-kind entertainment platform providing all key game industry services and countless centralized and decentralized apps under one roof, accessible through a single login. David Hanson, Founder and CEO of Ultra, says his vision is to deliver a full-stack blockchain solution that includes a fast, feeless layer 1 blockchain that is certified carbon neutral, an app ecosystem, a groundbreaking NFT standard, and an NFT marketplace. In addition to Ultra Games, Ultra’s flagship “killer app” which is built from the ground up as a self-service publishing platform to disrupt Valve’s Goliath PC games distribution platform, Steam. Since its inception in 2018, Ultra has built up an impressive roster of partnerships including AMD, Ubisoft, Theta, and The Sandbox. Over 170 publishers and developers have already committed to having their games distributed on the Ultra Games Platform.
Ultra's PC Gamer Study, published just recently, revealed a noteworthy trend in PC gaming, highlighting that only 36% of gamers choose to purchase titles at full price. This shift emphasizes the growing preference for discounted and free-to-play games. With three out of four respondents expressing concerns about the high cost of triple-A titles, the study indicates a surge in interest towards indie games. Impressively, 75% of gamers are open to purchasing digital indie titles, with motivations ranging from lower price points to a desire for creativity and exploration.
Recognizing that not all PC gamers prioritize ownership, Ultra positions itself as a blockchain-powered platform catering to those valuing control over digital assets. This move is expected to resonate with users seeking alternatives amid growing controversies surrounding centralized PC games. To address potential concerns from game developers, Ultra has introduced a developer-centric approach, allowing them to choose whether their games become tradable blockchain assets. Developers retain control over the minimum resale price and revenue split, ensuring a seamless transition to tokenization aligned with their preferences.
Nicolas Gilot highlighted this developer-friendly strategy, stating: "By tokenizing games on Ultra and providing developers with tradable options, we aim to unlock new revenue streams and community engagement features for all types of PC games, offering users true ownership of their content." The debut tokenized title, "Josh Journey: Darkness Totems," is a web2 beat-'em-up indie game developed by Brazil-based Provincia Studios. This move by Ultra is poised to redefine the gaming industry, ushering in an era of enhanced community engagement, diversified revenue streams, and empowerment for PC gamers through true ownership of their digital content.
