Ultra's recent PC Gamer Study sheds light on the complex attitudes of PC gamers towards blockchain technology, NFTs, and cryptocurrency integration in their favorite games. With responses from 2,000 gamers in the US and UK, the study provides valuable insights into the current landscape of web3 adoption in the gaming community.
Blockchain Excitement Diminishes with NFTs and Crypto
The study indicates that 46% of participants expressed excitement about the incorporation of blockchain elements in their preferred PC games. However, this enthusiasm waned when NFTs and cryptocurrency were mentioned, with only 19% showing interest in the latter. A significant 43% remained neutral on the matter, while 11% admitted to being annoyed by blockchain features.
In-Game Purchases vs. Limited Edition Items and NFTs
68% of respondents admitted to having purchased in-game content at some point, demonstrating an existing engagement with digital goods. When it came to limited edition in-game items, 26% expressed interest. However, the appeal of NFTs was considerably lower, indicating a disparity in acceptance levels among PC gamers.
Resistance to Cryptocurrency Rewards
While 34% of participants showed interest in earning in-game currency, this figure dropped to 18% when the rewards were specified as cryptocurrency. The findings suggest a hesitancy among gamers towards embracing cryptocurrency within gaming ecosystems, possibly influenced by concerns related to play-to-earn controversies and airdrop campaigns.
Nicolas Gilot, co-CEO of Ultra, commented on the study's outcomes, stating: "Our research shows that a significant minority of gamers are excited to see what the blockchain can bring to their favorite games." He acknowledged the challenges faced by the blockchain gaming community, attributing them to a degree of insularity and a focus on reaching familiar communities rather than engaging with a broader audience.
Gilot emphasized Ultra's commitment to bridging the gap between web2 and web3 gaming, citing the philosophy of addressing distribution and ownership issues in PC gaming through blockchain technology.
A Path Towards Mainstream Adoption?
Ultra's approach to fostering web3 adoption involves enabling games to become tradable assets, referred to as tokenized games. The study reveals that 58% of PC gamers expressed a willingness to sell their digital games, and 64% would consider repurchasing those titles at full price if they had the option to resell them later.
In conclusion, Ultra's PC Gamer Study underscores the nuanced sentiments within the gaming community regarding the integration of blockchain, NFTs, and cryptocurrency. As the industry navigates this landscape, the findings provide valuable insights for developers and platforms seeking to strike a balance between innovation and user acceptance.
