Wildcard Closed Alpha Playtest Taking Place March 14th

Wildcard, an upcoming esports multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, is preparing for its launch with a structured approach that differentiates its web2 and web3 elements. Led by Paul and Katy Drake Bettner, the development team has announced that the first closed alpha playtest will take place on March 14th, exclusively available to NFT holders. As the game nears its first testing phase, the team has also released its whitepaper and introduced WC tokens, a key component of the game's broader ecosystem.

WC Tokens and Airlock

As part of the initial rollout, 20% of the total WC token supply has been distributed. These tokens are currently locked under a mechanism referred to as "airlock," which prevents immediate trading. The purpose of this system is to create community awareness and establish liquidity before the tokens become tradable. By implementing this approach, the developers aim to create a sustainable holder community before the full launch of the game's ecosystem.

Web2 Approach and Gameplay

Despite its association with blockchain elements, Wildcard itself is not a web3 game. Instead, it is being developed as a free-to-play (F2P) game for PC and consoles, focusing on player customization and expression. The game will feature cosmetic items, including skins and customization options, and will generate revenue through the sale of off-chain cards and card packs. This model allows Wildcard to integrate seamlessly with established web2 platforms, marketplaces, and storefronts. The developers have also confirmed that the game will not include play-to-win mechanics, ensuring that competitive balance is maintained.

Web3 Metagame Wildclash

While Wildcard remains a web2 game, its web3 components will be part of a separate metagame known as Wildclash. This metagame is designed for players, collectors, and speculators who are more engaged with blockchain-based interactions. Hosted on the crypto-native Thousands.tv platform, Wildclash will integrate the WC token and provide additional engagement opportunities for users. Players and spectators will be able to earn tokens based on their participation, adding another layer of interaction for the most active members of the Wildcard community.

Unlike traditional web3 game developers, Playful Studios has decided to allocate 100% of the total 88,888,888 WC token supply to its community. This approach differentiates Wildcard from previous blockchain-based gaming projects and reflects the team’s focus on building an engaged player and spectator base.

Looking Ahead to Wildcard’s Launch

As Wildcard prepares for its first closed alpha playtest, players and blockchain enthusiasts alike will be watching to see how its dual web2 and web3 structure develops. By keeping the core gameplay experience within the web2 ecosystem while offering an optional web3 metagame, the developers are taking a unique approach to integrating blockchain technology in gaming. More details about the game's progress and future updates can be found through Wildcard’s official website and communication channels.
