Why Sinjin, Founder of MAYG, Chose Arbitrum

Sinjin, the founder of MAYG, recently shared a detailed account on X (Twitter) why the team ultimately selected Arbitrum as the platform for their project. The choice was the result of a multi-year journey that began in 2021, during a period when the web3 gaming ecosystem was rapidly evolving. Sinjin approached the space cautiously, initially planning to build on Ethereum due to its unmatched liquidity and established network. Over time, however, the team evaluated numerous Layer 1 and Layer 2 chains before landing on Arbitrum as the most aligned with their goals.

About MAYG

The game blends elements of tactical combat and resource management with turn-based mechanics. Each move requires players to consider their resources, character development, and long-term strategy. As Miki-san, players engage in various missions and encounters that require both skillful planning and adaptability. The strategic aspect of the game is balanced with action-oriented sequences that maintain a consistent pace while encouraging thoughtful decision-making.

Establishing Clear Criteria

From the beginning, Sinjin and the team defined four key criteria for evaluating any blockchain platform. These were on-chain liquidity and user activity, technological stability and scalability, the professionalism of the team behind the chain, and the level of support provided to developers. These criteria guided the evaluation of every chain they spoke to, and many were eliminated when they failed to meet one or more of these standards.

While the web3 environment in 2021 and 2022 included many generous grant and investment offers, Sinjin emphasized that funding alone was never enough. Several chains provided attractive financial incentives but lacked robust technology or showed signs of weak organizational structure. Others had promising technology but failed to understand or support the project’s goals.

Early Interactions with Arbitrum

Arbitrum stood out early in the evaluation process. As an Ethereum Layer 2, it addressed liquidity concerns and offered technical features that could support a scalable game. Sinjin noted that the Arbitrum team was professional and that their roadmap aligned well with MAYG’s vision. At one point, the team had completed most of the onboarding process without even requesting a grant or investment. However, the process stalled due to internal differences of opinion within Arbitrum.

A single individual disagreed with the project’s fit for the ecosystem, leading MAYG to step back and continue development on Ethereum. Despite the setback, the team maintained a good relationship with many at Arbitrum and kept communication open. Another chain was also considered during this time, but it did not offer the right cultural fit, and no formal partnership was pursued.

The Evolving Landscape in 2024

By 2024, the blockchain gaming environment had shifted significantly. Many early projects had lost traction, liquidity across various chains had diminished, and new Layer 2 solutions were entering the market. Amid these changes, Sinjin re-engaged with Arbitrum through XAI Games, a gaming-focused orbit within the Arbitrum ecosystem. The earlier internal blocker at Arbitrum had moved on, and the reception from the ecosystem was now entirely positive.

This renewed partnership brought immediate benefits. MAYG received consistent support, including weekly calls, fast integration with web3 infrastructure providers, and ongoing technical and marketing guidance. The team found that XAI Games, built around supporting gaming projects, understood the needs of game developers and offered an environment that was structured, communicative, and responsive.

A Community-Driven Ecosystem

The support extended beyond direct project assistance. MAYG was promoted through official Arbitrum and Arbitrum Play channels, and the team was invited to participate in monthly calls with other game developers. These sessions, led by members of the Arbitrum gaming ecosystem, offered updates on infrastructure, marketing resources, and opportunities for collaboration.

MAYG also became involved in the Arbitrum Gaming Ventures program (formerly Gaming Catalyst Program), which is supported by the Arbitrum DAO. This connection enabled further community engagement, such as game nights and promotional events, helping MAYG build visibility ahead of its launch.

Long-Term Thinking in Web3 Gaming

Looking back, Sinjin pointed out that several chains which had made early, generous offers to MAYG are no longer viable due to a collapse in liquidity or failure to grow their ecosystems. The decision to stay within the Ethereum ecosystem and work with a Layer 2 like Arbitrum proved to be forward-thinking.

For Sinjin and the MAYG team, the experience confirmed the importance of choosing partners based not only on funding, but on a combination of infrastructure, professionalism, and support. Their journey illustrates a long-term approach to building in web3 gaming—one that values reliability and alignment over short-term gains.

As MAYG approaches launch, the relationship with Arbitrum and XAI Games continues to deepen. The platform’s commitment to supporting web3 game developers remains consistent, and Sinjin remains confident that building with Arbitrum was the right decision.
