According to new data from Circana, the U.S. video game market experienced significant growth in June 2025, largely fueled by the launch of Nintendo's next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2. Total market spending reached $5.699 billion, representing a 22% increase compared to June 2024. This performance made it the strongest June in terms of revenue since 2019, highlighting a notable rebound for the industry despite a slight year-to-date decline.

The most substantial year-over-year growth came from hardware sales. Console revenue totaled $978 million in June, a 249% increase over the same month in 2024. This marked a new all-time high for June, surpassing the previous record of $608 million set in June 2008. The main driver of this growth was the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, which sold 1.6 million units in its debut month. This figure set a new U.S. market record for a console launch month, exceeding the 1.1 million units sold by the PlayStation 4 in November 2013.
The PlayStation 5 ranked second in hardware sales for June and maintained its position as the best-selling console in the U.S. for the first half of the year. Accessory sales also showed strong performance, increasing by 29% year over year to reach $293 million, setting another June record. Among Nintendo Switch 2 buyers, 32% also purchased the Switch 2 Pro Controller, suggesting strong demand for premium accessories alongside the new hardware.

Sales of video game content, which includes physical and digital full-game purchases, downloadable content, and in-game transactions, reached $4.427 billion in June, marking a 6% year-over-year increase. Subscription services continued to expand, with non-mobile gaming subscriptions generating $562 million in revenue during the month. This represented a 32% year-over-year increase and established a new monthly record for the category. The growth in subscriptions was partially driven by renewed interest in titles such as Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Despite the strong performance in June, total U.S. consumer spending on video games for the first six months of 2025 reached $25.537 billion, which was 2% lower than in the same period in 2024. This suggests that while specific product launches are capable of producing short-term gains, broader market dynamics remain somewhat restrained year to date.

Several new titles contributed to the growth in software sales during June. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was the second best-selling title of the month and ranked as the top performer on the PlayStation platform. Mario Kart World, which launched alongside the Nintendo Switch 2, ranked third overall despite digital sales not being included in its total. Circana reported that 82% of Switch 2 buyers also purchased Mario Kart World, either in a bundle or as a standalone purchase.
Other notable titles included Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, which placed tenth, and Stellar Blade, which debuted on Windows PC and ranked fifth. Cyberpunk 2077 also saw a resurgence in sales due to its launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, finishing eighteenth in the overall chart.

The month featured multiple cross-platform and exclusive releases. For Nintendo consoles, both current and previous generation, June saw the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, Street Fighter 6, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster, and Mario Kart World. Sales for legacy titles like The Legend of Zelda also increased, likely due to new users acquiring classic games after purchasing the Switch 2.
On the PlayStation platform, Death Stranding 2 led monthly sales, while Final Fantasy XVI benefited from its launch on Xbox, placing fourth overall. On PC, Stellar Blade was the only new title to enter the sales chart, showing continued interest in high-performance single-player games on the platform.

The mobile gaming segment remained stable with consistent top performers. MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, and Last War: Survival continued to lead mobile game revenue charts. Additionally, Pokemon GO saw a notable increase in revenue during the month, attributed to the annual Pokemon GO Fest event, which helped the title re-enter the mobile top ten.
June’s strong results highlighted the significant impact that major hardware and software launches can have on the gaming market. However, the 2% decline in year-to-date spending compared to 2024 suggests that broader growth may depend on sustained consumer interest and further major releases. The ongoing expansion of the subscription segment and increased performance from web3-integrated and cross-platform games will also play a role in shaping market trends for the remainder of the year.
