Sony Interactive Entertainment, the renowned gaming console giant, has filed a patent for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can be transferred across different games and consoles. This revolutionary step aims to offer an interoperable Web3 gameplay experience for users of Sony's flagship products, including the PlayStation console.

The patent, filed last week, outlines the potential for NFT transfers between various devices such as virtual reality (VR) headsets, tablets, computers, and smartphones. It also highlights the possibility of cross-generational NFT usage, like transferring assets from a PS4 to a PS5.

The patent application delves into the use of NFTs for achievements and tournaments, describing how digital assets may be employed by players across multiple computer simulations. Furthermore, Sony's patent emphasizes interoperability with non-Sony products, such as the Xbox or cloud-based video games, expanding asset transferability and usability within diverse gaming ecosystems.

To prevent gamers from exploiting the system and earning duplicate NFTs, the patent proposes a function to restrict the repetition of tasks in different products or games.

This isn't the first time we have seen Sony dabble into web3 gaming and NFTs as a technology. The company has previously reached out to Evolution Championship Series participants, inquiring which "NFT/digital collectible" they would be more likely to buy if Sony were to release any. More recently to the latter, Sony patented an NFT-lending platform for their consoles, and with the recent news, an announcement from the gaming behemoth seems almost at the door.
