Proof of Play removes $PIRATE rewards from Pirate Nation’s Infinite Tides Season 3, signaling a shift away from play-to-earn as the studio works on a new incentive model.

Proof of Play, the on-chain game studio building Pirate Nation, has announced the end of $PIRATE token rewards in its newest in-game event, Infinite Tides Season 3. The decision marks a clear departure from the play-to-earn model the studio previously adopted. While the new season still offers competitive gameplay, players will no longer receive token-based incentives for their performance.

Transition Away from Token Emissions

The current event, running through August 4, introduces a new mode called Legendary Depths. In this challenge, players must survive 25 waves and deal damage to a sea creature named Tortugon. Although the format continues the competitive spirit of earlier events, it no longer includes $PIRATE token rewards. Participation in the event now requires owning either a Founder’s Pirate or a VIP Pass.

This move reflects a broader change in the studio’s approach to player incentives. Amitt Mahajan, CEO of Proof of Play and co-creator of FarmVille, stated that the team is shifting away from traditional token emissions, describing the play-to-earn model as "fundamentally broken." According to Mahajan, the current system often rewards participants who are not aligned with the long-term interests of the project. The studio is now focused on developing a revised token framework aimed at creating more sustainable and mutually beneficial incentives.

The $PIRATE token was launched earlier this year as part of Pirate Nation’s on-chain economy. It initially served as a reward mechanism to encourage player engagement, especially during events like Infinite Tides. The recent decision to halt token rewards suggests a reevaluation of how tokens should function within the game’s ecosystem. Mahajan indicated that future developments would focus on ensuring that token use aligns with both the studio’s objectives and the interests of its player base.

In addition to restructuring its token model, Proof of Play is also looking at how to better reach mobile-native audiences. Mahajan noted that the majority of users the studio hopes to attract are not currently engaged with web3 platforms or active on social media channels like X. This suggests a possible expansion of the game’s reach beyond the current on-chain gaming community.

Continued Focus on On-Chain Infrastructure

Despite the changes in its rewards structure, Pirate Nation continues to serve as a prominent example of an on-chain game. The title features fully on-chain characters, inventory systems, and live events. Proof of Play, backed by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), has also expressed an interest in building infrastructure that other developers can use to create their own on-chain games.

The studio has stated that more information about the revised token model will be released in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Infinite Tides Season 3 will proceed without $PIRATE rewards, focusing instead on gameplay and community engagement within the existing Pirate Nation ecosystem.
