Football Manager 26 Delay and Rebuild

Football Manager has delivered yearly releases for more than three decades, but the path to Football Manager 26 was anything but routine. Sports Interactive planned to reinvent the franchise with Football Manager 25, but the project ultimately fell short of internal expectations and was canceled. The decision broke a 31-year run of annual releases and pushed the studio toward a rare development reset. With the extra time, the team focused on finishing the overhaul properly, resulting in Football Manager 26 - a game the studio calls a true new beginning rather than a continuation of previous entries.

The Game That Never Launched

FM25 was designed to be the largest shift the franchise had seen since adopting a 3D match engine in 2008. The plan involved a new engine, a redesigned matchday experience, a refreshed interface, women’s football, and a deeper tactical system. According to studio director Miles Jacobson, the team aimed too high for the timeline and struggled with transitioning away from an internal engine used for more than 30 years. By early 2025, FM25 was canceled entirely.

Jacobson notes that releasing an unfinished product would have damaged the Football Manager brand more than skipping a year. He described the cancellation as difficult but necessary, reinforcing that maintaining quality mattered more than meeting an annual deadline.

Building a New Foundation for FM26

With FM25 removed from the schedule, development shifted to Football Manager 26. The team treated it as a clean slate, not an iteration. The goal was to create a foundation that could support the next two decades of Football Manager development. The extra time allowed the studio to stabilize new systems, refine features that previously felt unfinished, and take a more deliberate approach to the series’ future direction.

A Match Engine Powered by Real-World Animation Data

One of the most significant changes in FM26 is the new match engine, which takes advantage of real animation data captured from Hawk-Eye, the technology used in professional stadiums for VAR and goal-line decisions. Hawk-Eye cameras track player movement at a skeletal level. Sports Interactive discovered that the system collected the same types of animation data used for character rigs in video games.

By adapting Hawk-Eye’s data and combining it with internal motion capture, FM26 delivers a match presentation that looks more natural than previous entries. Player motion, ball control, and visual angles resemble broadcast footage from top-tier league matches rather than game animation. Jacobson says the improvement adds a new sense of realism and helps match outcomes feel more believable.

Tactical Depth That Reflects the Modern Game

Football Manager 26 expands tactical control by introducing formation management for in-possession and out-of-possession play. This addition reflects how modern managers adjust shape depending on whether their team has the ball. The feature doubles the number of tactical possibilities and allows strategies closer to real-world teams.

Several legacy features were removed or redesigned to support transparency and relevance. Player Shouts were cut due to unclear impact, and classic roles like the trequartista were retired because they no longer represent modern defensive expectations. FM26 also introduces the FMPedia, a system that explains tactics and visualizes concepts for players who want support without compromising complexity.

Women’s Football Fully Integrated

The addition of women’s football marks another major milestone. FM26 includes 14 women’s leagues, such as the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States and the Women’s Super League in England. The development process began in 2021 and required collecting new data, building scouting networks, and working with women’s soccer professionals to ensure accuracy.

Sports Interactive treats women’s football with the same depth and seriousness as the men’s game. Player attributes, animations, injury types, and recovery times reflect real data. Jacobson emphasizes that the integration is not a separate mode. It exists within the same world, using the same systems and scouting data structure as the rest of the game.

Realism Balanced With Possibility

Real-world soccer developments, such as the expanded Club World Cup and increased prize money, already fit within Football Manager’s financial systems. The game still leaves room for unexpected success stories, echoing real-world examples like Leicester City’s Premier League title in 2015. Jacobson says the series values realism, but also understands that players want the possibility of achieving rare outcomes.

Football Manager 26 launches November 4 on the Epic Games Store.
