Midnight Society, the game development studio behind the first-person shooter DeadDrop, has officially ceased operations. The closure follows the studio’s decision to sever ties with popular gaming personality Dr Disrespect, also known as Guy Beahm. The separation came after allegations surfaced that Beahm had engaged in inappropriate conversations with a minor during his time on Twitch, an issue that had remained largely undisclosed for years.
Midnight Society Closes
With Midnight Society shutting down, the development of DeadDrop has officially ended. The game, initially marketed as an innovative “vertical shooter,” had generated interest within the gaming community due to its ambitious level design and high-risk, methodical gameplay. Dr Disrespect had been heavily involved in shaping the concept, working alongside artists and designers to build a persistent world set within a massive tower.
Despite early momentum, the studio struggled to maintain progress after its separation from Beahm. Midnight Society had aimed to take a transparent approach to game development, frequently sharing updates and early builds, but internal challenges and the fallout from the controversy made it difficult to sustain the project. The closure has left employees and fans uncertain about what could have been a unique addition to the first-person shooter genre.
Dr Disrespect Addresses Midnight Society's Closure
Following the studio’s closure, Dr Disrespect shared a series of posts reflecting on DeadDrop’s development. He described how the game had been conceived years ago, focusing on large-scale vertical level design and strategic gameplay. The original vision included players navigating different sectors within a massive tower, with elements such as wingsuiting into the environment and selecting landing zones to create varied gameplay experiences.
He also shared concept art and early designs from the project, highlighting his collaboration with Midnight Society’s artists and designers. According to Beahm, the team had made significant progress in building the game, with features like a firing range to showcase early mechanics and a playable “Drive to the Tower” experience. He expressed disappointment at how the situation unfolded and stated that the project had the potential to be something unique. However, he also hinted at future game development ideas, suggesting that he remains committed to exploring new opportunities in the industry.
DeadDrop Key Art
The closure of Midnight Society and the cancellation of DeadDrop have reignited discussions about accountability and transparency within the gaming industry. The situation highlights the challenges that arise when high-profile figures face allegations and how these controversies can affect the teams and projects associated with them.
While Dr Disrespect continues to stream on YouTube, the long-term effects on his career and potential future projects remain uncertain. Midnight Society’s closure serves as a reminder of the volatility within game development, where external controversies can significantly impact a studio’s success. The gaming community will be watching closely to see if any elements of DeadDrop’s concept are revived in future projects or if Dr Disrespect pursues new game development opportunities.
