Star Atlas open sources Star Frame, a modular framework for building complex, scalable, and secure Solana programs. Learn about its features, benefits, and community impact.
Gaming studio ATMTA, Inc., the team behind Star Atlas, has officially open sourced Star Frame, a modular framework designed to simplify the development of complex programs on Solana. The release is intended as a way of giving back to the Solana developer community, which supported Star Atlas during its early stages.
According to ATMTA, the framework emerged from the technical challenges encountered while building one of the largest space MMO crypto games. By making Star Frame publicly available, the team aims to provide other developers with tools to overcome technical barriers and accelerate program development on Solana.
Details on Star Atlas' Star Frame
Star Frame is a trait-based framework created to make it easier to develop scalable and secure programs on Solana. It is designed to provide flexibility, performance, and safety for developers building sophisticated web3 applications. Modularity is achieved through a trait-based design, which includes practical default implementations that developers can extend or reimplement to suit specific project needs. This approach allows the framework to accommodate a wide variety of blockchain applications.
Performance is maintained through the use of near-zero cost abstractions and zero-copy data structures, which minimize compute overhead and allow developers to allocate more resources to their own logic. Safety is supported by compile-time validation, which reduces runtime errors and improves security for critical program logic. By combining these three principles, Star Frame aims to provide a robust environment for developing web3 applications on Solana.

Star Frame incorporates several components that distinguish it from existing frameworks. The Unsized Type System uses dynamic, zero-copy data structures, including resizable lists, sets, and maps, to enable efficient use of memory. This system allows developers to create applications such as large player inventories for web3 games or complex order books in decentralized finance platforms with minimal overhead.
The Account Set Lifecycle provides a structured three-stage process consisting of decode, validate, and cleanup steps. This process removes uncertainty from account validation, ensuring security, reliability, and correctness by managing critical information that is often overlooked. The framework also includes a trait-based architecture that offers a reusable set of behaviors for developers. These traits can be extended and customized to meet the requirements of different projects, enabling faster innovation without sacrificing performance or security.

ATMTA tested Star Frame against Anchor, a commonly used Solana framework, by reimplementing Anchor’s benchmark program. The results indicated that Star Frame provided additional flexibility and freedom for complex programs while reducing compute unit usage and binary size.
Star Frame is available as an open-source project on GitHub and is also listed on the Rust package registry, crates.io. Additional information, including documentation and build instructions, can be found on the official Star Atlas website and the team’s Medium announcement post. Developers interested in using the framework can access these resources to integrate Star Frame into their projects.
Details on Star Atlas' Star Frame
Star Atlas is a sci-fi MMO and grand strategy game built on Solana and Unreal Engine 5. The project features a decentralized space metaverse where players can own, craft, and trade digital assets such as starships, crew, and land through NFTs. Players can engage in competitive or cooperative gameplay within a galactic economy, where governance mechanisms influence the direction of the universe.
The Star Atlas ecosystem includes browser-based strategy modules such as SAGE Labs and Holosim. In SAGE Labs, players join one of three factions and compete to complete Faction Infrastructure Contracts, acquiring resources and crafting items at Starbases. Holosim is a free-to-play version of SAGE Labs that allows users to experience the game without connecting a crypto wallet, while players who link their Solana wallet can participate in play-to-earn mechanics and compete for seasonal rewards.
The main Star Atlas MMO is available on the Epic Games Store and requires a game key obtained through the official Discord server. In addition to releasing Star Frame, ATMTA recently announced Zink SVM Layer 1 during the Star Atlas Summer event, demonstrating the team’s ongoing commitment to developing Solana-based technologies and supporting the web3 developer community.
