Over 70% of Women Online Play Games Globally

The gaming landscape has evolved significantly, with women now comprising a substantial portion of the global gaming community according to recent data published by Newzoo. Nearly half of all gamers today are women, a fact that underscores the importance of understanding their experiences, preferences, and contributions to the industry. This shift is not only reshaping how games are developed and marketed but also highlighting the need for a more inclusive and diverse gaming culture.

Women’s Presence in Gaming

Recent data from Newzoo's 2023 Global Gamer Study offers a comprehensive look at the role of women in gaming. According to the study, 72% of women in the surveyed online population play video games, compared to 81% of men. This nearly even split reflects the significant presence of women in the gaming world. Out of all gamers, 45% are women, indicating their growing influence in the industry.

Despite their substantial involvement, fewer women identify as "gamers" compared to their male counterparts. Only 36% of female players consider themselves gamers, and 31% are recognized as such by others. This contrasts with 50% of male players who identify as gamers and 44% who are acknowledged as such by others. However, this does not diminish their impact on the gaming industry, as nearly half of the women who play games also spend money on them.

Gaming Preferences and Platform Usage

Women's gaming preferences and behaviors also reveal distinct patterns. A significant portion, 44%, of female gamers, play exclusively on mobile platforms, a much higher percentage than male gamers, of whom only 27% do so. This preference for mobile gaming among women highlights the importance of developing games that cater to this demographic.

In terms of gaming identity, women are more likely to see themselves as casual gamers, with 44% identifying as such. Only 23% consider themselves core gamers, although this figure rises among those who play on PC or consoles. Over 38% of female console gamers and just over 36% of female PC gamers identify as core gamers, indicating a strong attachment to gaming beyond casual play.

Importance of Diversity and Representation

Diversity in gaming is a crucial issue for both men and women, with 62% of women and 65% of men considering it important. The call for diverse characters and narratives has become louder as more players seek to see themselves represented in the games they play. This push for diversity is not only about character design but also about creating stories and worlds that resonate with a broader audience.

The gaming industry has made strides in improving representation, with more female and non-binary characters taking on leading roles in major titles. Characters like Ellie in The Last of Us, Aloy in Horizon: Zero Dawn, and V in Cyberpunk 2077 have become iconic, reflecting the industry’s slow but steady progress toward inclusivity. Upcoming titles like Star Wars: Outlaws and GTA VI are set to continue this trend, offering female protagonists in roles traditionally dominated by male characters.

Sports games, historically less popular among female players, are also beginning to reflect this change. Franchises like NBA 2K, NHL, and EA Sports FC have introduced female leagues and clubs, with more women athletes featured on cover art. While only 18% of female players currently engage with sports titles, the increasing visibility of women in these games could help attract more female gamers to this genre.

Supporting Women in Gaming

Efforts to empower women in gaming extend beyond in-game representation. Various organizations and initiatives are working to support women both as players and as professionals in the industry. Groups like Women in Games, Women in Games International, and Black Girl Gamers are at the forefront of promoting visibility and representation. Additionally, mentorship programs and educational initiatives, such as those offered by Girls Make Games and Girls Who Code, are essential for encouraging the next generation of women in gaming.

For those interested in exploring the topic further, Newzoo's Global Gamer Study offers a wealth of data, providing insights into the preferences, behaviors, and motivations of women gamers across 36 markets globally.
