Crafting high-tier armor in The Forge is only the first step toward real survivability. Without the right runes, even the best armor recipes fall short in difficult content. Armor runes provide passive bonuses that work constantly in combat, and when stacked correctly, they define how durable, mobile, or aggressive your character can be.
What Armor Runes Do in The Forge
Armor runes grant automatic defensive and utility effects during combat. Unlike weapon runes, which increase damage output, armor runes focus on keeping you alive through damage reduction, reflected damage, stamina support, and emergency buffs when your health drops low.
Each armor piece can hold up to three rune slots, for a total of nine armor runes across your full set.
Only three runes can be socketed into armor:
Briar Notch
Rage Mark
Ward Patch
All other runes are restricted to weapons or tools and do not work on armor.

Best Armor Rune Combinations
Choosing the right rune combination matters more than stacking a single rune type blindly. Below are the most effective armor-focused setups.
Tank-Focused Build
For players who facetank bosses and elite packs, prioritize damage mitigation and health pools:
Helmet:
- Ward Patch (Shield I + Vitality I): 9% damage reduction plus 12% max health
- Briar Notch (Thorn I + Endurance I): Reflects 9% damage, increases stamina
- Ward Patch (Shield I + Endurance I): Additional damage reduction with stamina boost
Chest Plate:
- Ward Patch (Shield I + Vitality I): Core damage reduction
- Briar Notch (Thorn I + Vitality I): Reflection damage plus health
- Ward Patch (Shield I + Swiftness I): Damage reduction with 10% movement speed
Leggings:
- Briar Notch (Thorn I + Vitality I): More reflection and health stacking
- Ward Patch (Shield I + Endurance I): Final layer of damage reduction
- Briar Notch (Thorn I + Surge I): Reflection with reduced dash cooldown
This setup stacks multiple Ward Patches for consistent damage reduction while Briar Notch runes punish aggressive enemies. The Vitality traits across all pieces create a massive health pool that keeps you standing through extended fights.
Aggressive Berserk Build
If you prefer high-risk combat that rewards low health play, Rage Mark runes become your foundation:
All Armor Pieces:
- Rage Mark (Berserk I + Swiftness I): 23% physical damage and movement speed when below 35% health
- Rage Mark (Berserk I + Stride I): Additional berserk trigger with increased dash distance
- Rage Mark (Berserk I + Endurance I): Berserk activation with stamina for sustained aggression
This build transforms you into a glass cannon that explodes with power when wounded. The 35% health threshold activates frequently during boss fights, giving you massive damage windows to finish encounters before dying.
Warning
Berserker builds require precise timing and excellent dodge mechanics. One mistake at low health means instant death.
Balanced Build
Mix rune types for adaptability across different content:
Helmet:
- Rage Mark (Berserk I + Swiftness I)
- Briar Notch (Thorn I + Vitality I)
- Ward Patch (Shield I + Endurance I)
Chest Plate:
- Ward Patch (Shield I + Vitality I)
- Briar Notch (Thorn I + Surge I)
- Rage Mark (Berserk I + Stride I)
Leggings:
- Briar Notch (Thorn I + Swiftness I)
- Ward Patch (Shield I + Endurance I)
- Rage Mark (Berserk I + Swiftness I)
This configuration gives you consistent damage reduction from Ward Patch, passive retaliation from Briar Notch, and emergency burst from Rage Mark when fights go south.

The Forge Guide: Best Armor Rune Builds
Your armor runes represent the difference between struggling through content and dominating every encounter. Farm deliberately, enhance carefully, and stack those secondary traits for maximum impact. The Forge rewards players who understand these systems, turning good gear into legendary protection.
