How to Join Off The Grid Xbox Series X Playtest

Off the Grid's early access is now officially available for everyone on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Seemingly dropping out of nowhere, the hype is real with the game’s unique Extraction Royale mode, an intense mix of fan-favorite FPS titles like Escape from Tarkov, PUBG, and Apex Legends.

As players dive into this high-stakes world, some might encounter frustrating lag issues and FPS drops, especially since the game is still in early access and hasn’t been fully optimized yet. But whether you're playing on an older PC or just want to squeeze out every frame for a competitive edge, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with this guide to boost your FPS.

You probably already know the basics: lowering your in-game graphics settings is the first step. Head over to your settings by pressing ESC, and set everything to low. But if you've already done that and your game still feels choppy, here’s a hidden trick to push your FPS even further:

Find Your OTG Game Folder: Press the Windows key and search for "Saved Games." Click the folder and locate your Off the Grid (OTG) game folder.

Open GameUserSettings File: Inside the OTG folder, find a file called GameUserSettings (it's a JSON file). Right-click it and open it with Notepad.

Tweak the Settings: Once you’ve opened the GameUserSettings file, you’ll notice a list of settings represented by numbers. These numbers correspond to the graphics settings you’ve chosen in-game. For example, if you’ve set texture quality to its lowest setting, you’ll see a '1' next to it. But here's the trick: you can actually push the settings even lower than what’s available in the game menu by changing those 1’s to 0’s. This will further reduce the quality, allowing your game to prioritize performance over visuals.

Scroll through the file and look for other graphics-related settings, such as mesh quality and mesh hideout quality. Again, change the '1's to '0's wherever you want to minimize the load on your system. If you're unsure which settings to tweak, focus on anything related to shadows, textures, foliage, and post-processing, as these often have the biggest impact on FPS. However, you don’t have to sacrifice everything for performance. If you still want certain settings to remain at low or medium, you can keep them by adjusting the numbers accordingly. For example, setting a '2' for medium or a '3' for high quality will give you more flexibility in balancing performance and visuals.

Quick Tip: Be careful when editing this file! It also contains settings for things like mouse sensitivity, keybindings, and audio settings. If you accidentally change those, it could mess up your gameplay experience. Make sure to leave these lines untouched unless you specifically want to adjust them.

Save and Lock Your Changes: After making your adjustments, save the file by clicking File > Save, then close Notepad. Next, right-click on the GameUserSettings file, select Properties, and check the Read-Only box. Click Apply and then OK.

This ensures that your changes won’t be overwritten the next time you launch the game. By setting it to Read-Only, you lock in your custom settings, preventing the game from automatically resetting them during updates or restarts. If you need to edit it again later, simply uncheck the Read-Only box.

Once you've completed the tweaks, fire up Off the Grid and see if this trick has made a difference in your gameplay! That wraps up our guide, hopefully, these steps help you enjoy a smoother experience. A big shout-out and thanks to Andy Slaps for the original insights that inspired this guide. Good luck, and we’ll see you in the game!
