YGG Play Summit Drives Mainstream Adoption

The YGG Play Summit concluded its Town Hall event at Samsung Hall in SM Aura Premier, BGC, with discussions focused on how web3 gaming is advancing toward mainstream adoption. Industry leaders explored ways to integrate blockchain-based gaming with established platforms and distribution channels, emphasizing accessibility and player-first experiences.

Emmy Lou Versoza-Delfin, MIMAROPA Regional Director of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the role of web3 in the Philippines’ broader digital transformation goals. She noted that integrating web3 through familiar channels supports faster onboarding, creates job opportunities, and encourages skills development among students and professionals.

“At the heart of digital transformation are the people (our students, our professionals, and communities) who take these opportunities and turn them into meaningful outcomes,” Versoza-Delfin said. “Programs like this don’t just teach skills; they open doors, build confidence, and ignite creativity.”

Leveraging Existing Gaming Platforms for Web3 Adoption

Several speakers highlighted the importance of meeting players on platforms they already use. Jeffrey “Jihoz” Zirlin, co-founder of Sky Mavis, described Ronin as a platform that could play a role similar to Nintendo in the blockchain space. By building on Ethereum and focusing on high-quality gaming experiences, Ronin aims to expand adoption while offering polished gameplay and streamlined onboarding.

Theodore Agranat, Director of web3 at Gunzilla Games, shared a similar approach from the AAA side, explaining how their title Off The Grid is extending to Steam and PlayStation while adding web3 features that complement existing gameplay rather than disrupt it.

Oliver Maroney, Head of Business Development and Partnerships at OpenSea, emphasized that crypto adoption depends on abstraction. He explained that players should be able to interact with in-game tokens seamlessly across platforms. According to Maroney, simplifying these interactions will help bring liquidity, visibility, and new audiences into web3 gaming ecosystems.

Combining Web2 and Web3 Strategies

Luke Barwikowski, founder and CEO of Pixels, discussed hybrid approaches that mix web2 user acquisition techniques with web3 incentives. Pixels’ play-to-airdrop model, which distributed token rewards to active players ahead of the PIXEL token launch in 2024, has influenced similar strategies throughout the industry. Barwikowski pointed out that observing effective web2 play-to-earn models provides valuable insights, allowing web3 games to leverage experience with live token operations for smoother adoption.

Investors such as Shi Khai Wei from LongHash Ventures and Alessia Baumgartner of DWF Labs emphasized emerging trends in digital economies and token management, reflecting continued confidence in web3 gaming as a viable long-term market.

Moving Web3 Gaming Toward Broader Audiences

The YGG Play Summit highlighted that web3 gaming is increasingly adopting mainstream-friendly strategies, including integration with familiar platforms, simplified token systems, and hybrid monetization models. By focusing on accessibility and player-first experiences, developers and investors aim to expand beyond niche communities and make blockchain gaming a part of everyday gaming culture.
