Sega is set to release Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties on February 12, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, bundling a remake of the 2009 classic Yakuza 3 with an all-new story featuring Kiryu’s adversary, Yoshitaka Mine. During a recent press event, we were able to go hands-on with both games, exploring the updated Okinawan story, the new Dark Ties narrative, and several expanded gameplay systems.
Revisiting Okinawa With Kiryu
In Yakuza Kiwami 3, Kazuma Kiryu attempts a quieter life running the Morning Glory Orphanage, only to become embroiled in a conflict with the Ryudo Family, an Okinawan yakuza group targeting the orphanage’s land. The demo allowed players to experience confrontations with Ryudo patriarch Shigeru Nakahara and captain Rikiya Shimabukuro. One notable addition to the remake is a new cutscene showing Rikiya’s perception of Kiryu shift after witnessing him protect a local shopping district leader. The scene is notable for its subtle facial animations, capturing a change in respect that was not present in the original release.
Combat in Yakuza Kiwami 3 continues to be a central feature, now enhanced with the Ryukyu Style, which allows Kiryu to seamlessly switch between different weapons mapped to separate buttons. Even simple attacks feel responsive, while Heat Actions and the Dragon Boost system add cinematic flair to the brawls. The Dragon Finisher, in particular, closes fights with a visually striking move that reinforces Kiryu’s iconic status as the Dragon of Dojima.
Life at the Orphanage and Player Choice
Outside of combat, Kiryu’s responsibilities at the Morning Glory Orphanage form a major part of the gameplay. Players interact with the children through everyday tasks such as cooking, sewing, and helping with homework, while meaningful conversations build trust reflected in Kiryu’s Daddy Rank. As trust grows, each child unlocks unique Family Time Events, creating small but emotionally grounded moments that emphasize Kiryu’s role as a caregiver. These interactions help balance the intense combat sequences with quieter, narrative-driven gameplay.
The remake also introduces Bad Boy Dragon, a team-based combat mode in which Kiryu leads the Haisai Girls gang to defend Okinawa from the Tokyo Night Terrors. Total Annihilation and Turf Wars modes add larger-scale battles to the experience, allowing players to coordinate with AI allies in multi-enemy encounters. This expansion brings a new layer of strategy to the traditionally street-level action of the Yakuza series.
Exploring Dark Ties and Mine’s Perspective
Dark Ties shifts the focus from Kiryu to Yoshitaka Mine, offering a perspective rarely explored in the series. Mine’s detached and analytical personality contrasts sharply with Kiryu’s empathetic nature, and the story emphasizes his inner monologues, providing insight into his motivations and personal code. This approach adds depth to a character often seen only as an antagonist.
Mine’s combat style is rooted in shoot boxing, allowing for fast, fluid strikes and grappling techniques. The Shackled Heart gauge enables players to enter Dark Awakening mode, transforming Mine’s precise movements into more aggressive, brutal attacks. This duality reflects Mine’s composed exterior and the darker, more violent side of his personality.
The narrative also features Kanda Damage Control, where Mine works to improve the public image of Ryo Kanda, a Tojo Clan lieutenant. Completing missions increases Kanda’s Charisma Rank and unlocks Drink Links, which allow players to explore Kanda’s personality further and witness his more human, often humorous side. This system complements Mine’s story, highlighting the interaction between cold strategy and personal relationships.
What to Expect at Launch
Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties aims to offer both a polished remake of a classic Yakuza title and an original story that deepens the series’ universe. The updated combat mechanics, expanded orphanage interactions, and new team-based battle modes provide additional gameplay variety. Meanwhile, Dark Ties presents a different tone, focusing on character study and precise combat. The release on PS5 and PS4 ensures the package is accessible to long-time fans and new players alike.
