Warframe’s new romance system, developed with author Kathryn Kingsley, introduces meaningful player choice and character-driven narratives in the latest updates.
Warframe has always offered a wide range of activities, from fishing and creature capturing to mech piloting and hacking. Now, the game is adding romance options, giving players another way to connect with its expansive world. Creative Director Rebecca Ford said the goal was to let players “find their own fun,” and romance is now part of that experience.

The romance system came about thanks to bestselling author Kathryn Kingsley, who joined Warframe as Principal Writer. Ford, a fan of romance stories, discovered Kingsley through a book club and reached out to her on LinkedIn with an opportunity to work on the game. For Kingsley, the timing was perfect during a tough period in her life. After a quick conversation, she was hired to build Warframe’s first live service branching romance system.
When Kingsley looked into romance systems in other live service games, she found there weren’t many examples that didn’t rely on save reloading to fix mistakes. Since Warframe can’t do that, she created a system where player choices matter but don’t permanently punish you if you slip up. This keeps conversations feeling important without locking players out of story options.

The 1999 DLC introduced Protoframes - human versions of Warframes with distinct personalities and faces. Ford said it was important these characters felt like real people, not just quest givers. Players can make characters upset, apologize, learn about their fears, or even break up and make up depending on who they’re talking to. It adds a new emotional layer to the game.
Unlike a traditional romance novel that follows a set story, Warframe’s branching system lets players explore different romantic or platonic paths. Kingsley said this was both challenging and exciting since she had to write valid dialogue for many possible player choices. The system focuses on personality-driven interactions, letting players discover who these characters are on their own terms.
