Ubisoft is expanding its use of artificial intelligence by introducing AI-governed agents into the web3 game Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E.. While AI tools continue to generate debate in traditional game development, Ubisoft appears to have identified web3 environments as a more suitable space to experiment with emerging technologies. This latest development reflects the company’s approach to exploring decentralized systems in a controlled, interactive setting.

In collaboration with decentralized AI infrastructure provider LibertAI, Ubisoft will assign an AI agent to each Niji Warrior NFT. These agents act as digital extensions of the players, with capabilities that include participating in the game’s governance structure. Each AI agent is initialized using character-specific data, such as age, profession, personality traits, and backstory. This information helps to define the agent’s behavioral framework, guided by large language model filtering to produce contextually consistent actions.
The voting process within the game will operate through ERC-6551 token-bound wallets, enabling agents to act independently or in coordination with player input. All decisions and memory states of the agents are stored on Aleph Cloud, providing a transparent and on-chain record of governance actions. This setup allows for both manual and autonomous participation in shaping the game’s direction.

Ubisoft describes the feature as an interactive way to explore themes already present in the game’s narrative. According to an interview with BlockchainGamer, Didier Genevois, the game’s technical director and executive producer, says embedding governance in gameplay aligns with the broader themes of Captain Laserhawk, which include surveillance and synthetic identity. Genevois stated that incorporating AI into governance "feels like the most honest move" in a universe built around questioning systems of control and decision-making.
Although the AI governance system has not yet gone live, Ubisoft and LibertAI aim to foster real-time, emergent behavior among the agents. This could include agents forming voting blocs, deliberating within digital communication spaces, or engaging in negotiation with other groups. These interactions are designed to influence not only the game’s storyline but also its structural development over time.

LibertAI lead contributor Jonathan Schemoul emphasized the broader purpose behind the initiative. He noted that the system is intended to prompt players to reflect on the relationship between human and machine decision-making. This integration marks a new direction in Ubisoft’s approach to web3 game development, combining blockchain mechanics with AI to create a persistent, decentralized, and interactive governance framework.
