Lisbon-based gaming company Today has announced the launch of Dreamia, an advanced AI-powered character engine designed to enhance storytelling in real-time within its upcoming cozy social simulation game.
Dreamia marks Today’s most significant product release to date, promising a transformative experience for players cultivating virtual island communities. In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about Dreamia as well as Today's recent $5 Million funding round.
Dreamia: Advanced AI-Powered Character Engine
To support its vision of a dynamic and interactive social sim, Today secured $5 million in funding earlier this year from investors Sfermion and Big Brain. The company boasts a team of industry veterans, including former leads from Nintendo, SEGA, Epic Games, and Unity, ensuring a blend of expertise in game development and AI technology.
Today sets itself apart by leveraging generative AI-powered intelligent NPCs (non-player characters), aiming to redefine player immersion through realistic and dynamic interactions. Unlike traditional social simulation games, where NPC interactions often feel scripted and shallow, Today's Residents utilize advanced AI to mirror genuine human-like conversations.
Moreover, Today plans to leverage emergent interactions with Residents to enhance its storytelling. With a focus on crafting emotionally resonant experiences, the game promises unique narratives that evolve alongside players' choices and actions.
Michael O'Connor, co-founder of Today, expressed the team's dedication to transforming player expectations, stating, "We're transforming expectations by replicating the nuances of real-life dynamics using advanced AI that gives our NPCs unparalleled depth and responsiveness."
Today Secures $5 Million in Funding
Dreamia is engineered to create intelligent, interactive non-player characters (NPCs) that bring a new level of realism and responsiveness to gaming. As players engage with the game, their actions influence the storyline, making each player’s experience unique. This personalized interaction enhances the game’s authenticity, complexity, and player retention, according to Today.
Michael O’Connor, cofounder of Today, emphasized Dreamia's innovative approach, stating, “We’ve built Dreamia in-house. Our story-first approach embeds real-life dynamics into NPCs, giving them emotional depth and contextual awareness.” O’Connor believes this approach not only enhances gameplay but also gives players more control over their narrative journey.

Dreamia's core features are designed to make NPCs feel more lifelike and engaging:
Dreamia AI NPCs
Creative Director Ben Cleary, an Oscar-winning writer and director, highlighted the importance of storytelling in creating immersive game experiences. Cleary explained, “Storytelling isn’t just about telling a story; it’s about creating an emotional impact that lingers. These narrative fundamentals are crucial for delivering interactive storytelling at scale.”
Later this year, players and developers will gain access to Dreamia’s character creation tools via a visual front-end, both in-game and online. This will complement Today’s procedural creation tool for dynamically generating buildings and interiors, further enhancing player control and creativity.
Dreamia AI NPCs
Today plans to launch its game in alpha early next year, with a major playtest scheduled for mid-summer. The company currently employs 39 people and has raised $5 million to date. While there are other NPC solutions in the market, Today asserts that Dreamia’s in-house development allows for more nuanced and responsive NPC interactions compared to third-party APIs.
O’Connor illustrated Dreamia’s capabilities with an example from the game, where NPCs, known as Residents, react to changes in their environment, such as new outfits chosen by players. This level of contextual awareness and responsiveness is designed to make NPCs feel more lifelike and engaging, enhancing player immersion.
Today The Game Art
Dreamia is poised to redefine the relationship between players and NPCs, offering a new generation of narrative experiences. By integrating advanced AI to create emotionally intelligent, contextually aware, and dynamically responsive NPCs, Dreamia sets a new standard in the gaming industry. Today’s innovative approach promises to deliver a more immersive, interactive, and enjoyable gaming experience for all players.
