Star Atlas releases Holosim, a free-to-play version of SAGE Labs, enabling players to explore the web3 strategy game risk-free. Test features, learn mechanics, and engage in space missions.
Star Atlas, the Solana-based web3 game and ecosystem, has launched Holosim, a free-to-play version of its on-chain strategy title SAGE Labs. Holosim is now available in a public test phase and is designed to allow new players to explore the game without requiring an initial financial investment or direct interaction with blockchain systems. This approach makes it easier for anyone to experience the game’s mechanics and environment before committing to the mainnet play-to-earn version.
Star Atlas New Free-to-Play Version of SAGE Labs
Holosim replicates the core gameplay of SAGE Labs within the Star Atlas universe but removes the blockchain integration and earning potential that define the original title. This version is aimed at lowering the entry barrier for new players who may want to experience the gameplay without the obligation to purchase digital assets or rent fleets.
In Holosim, players choose from one of three factions and work to deliver Faction Infrastructure Contracts (FICs) to Starbases located within their chosen faction's territory. Each faction comes with its own set of missions, exclusive resources, and specialized ships. FICs, which were introduced in SAGE Labs late last year, are crafted using various resources and serve as a simplified mechanism for earning the in-game currency $ATLAS on mainnet.
While Holosim does not offer play-to-earn capabilities, it simulates the game structure closely enough to provide a meaningful preview of what to expect in the full blockchain-integrated version. Holosim is accessible directly through a web browser at holosim.staratlas.com. Upon entering the platform, players are welcomed by a personal AI assistant and are guided through character creation, including the selection of a faction and player name.

Beyond offering a free-to-play option, Holosim is also being used as a testing ground for new features that may be integrated into the mainnet version of the game. This setup provides a controlled environment for developers to receive player feedback and assess feature performance without impacting the live blockchain-based economy.
Several new systems are being evaluated during this public test phase. One of the major additions is a combat system that allows players to engage in strategic ship battles. In this mode, fleet losses are permanent, which adds a level of consequence and requires players to approach each battle with careful planning. Another feature being tested is the personal AI assistant, named SAGE, designed to help guide players through the various aspects of the Star Atlas universe. This tool is particularly beneficial for new players looking to learn the game's systems and lore.
To further improve the onboarding experience, a new tutorial system is also being trialed. This system is meant to help players become familiar with core game mechanics quickly and effectively. Additionally, Holosim includes the Route Manager, a set of automation tools aimed at simplifying in-game operations and improving efficiency for players. A questing system is also in development, which introduces daily missions, storyline quests, and other task types that allow players to earn experience and progress through the game.
Star Atlas New Free-to-Play Version of SAGE Labs
The release of Holosim reflects Star Atlas’s broader strategy of making its web3 gaming experience more accessible and inclusive. By offering a free-to-play version, the development team opens the door for more players to join the community, learn the game mechanics, and provide feedback that could shape future updates. For players hesitant to participate in the blockchain-integrated version of SAGE Labs, Holosim offers an opportunity to explore the game risk-free.
Earlier this year, the Star Atlas player community generated over $700,000 in monthly revenue, highlighting the potential of its play-to-earn ecosystem. With the introduction of Holosim, Star Atlas continues to expand its reach, providing both an entry point for new users and a testbed for future enhancements.
