Square Enix Brings Game to Sony’s Soneium Blockchain

Square Enix’s web3 game, Symbiogenesis, was originally scheduled to be discontinued in July 2025. However, Sony has announced that the game will instead expand to its blockchain platform, Soneium. This move brings one of the first web3 titles from a major game publisher to Sony’s blockchain, marking a strategic step in the development of its digital ecosystem.

Square Enix x Sony x Soneium

Sony stated that Soneium is designed to serve as a hub where game studios and entertainment companies can collaborate, distribute content, and connect with a new generation of creators. According to Sony, the platform offers infrastructure that supports cross-game collaboration, digital ownership, and interoperability, all of which are foundational to the web3 model. While it is unclear how much new content will be added to Symbiogenesis, Sony is using the game as a starting point for broader player engagement across its blockchain-based offerings.

Expanded Player Engagement Through Crossover Titles

As part of the expansion, Sony is connecting Symbiogenesis to two other games on the Soneium blockchain: Evermoon and Sleepagotchi. Players who complete the Symbiogenesis experience will be eligible for rewards and participation opportunities in these titles. A limited-time quest in Symbiogenesis will grant players a commemorative NFT collectible. This item will unlock benefits in both Evermoon and Sleepagotchi, creating a shared progression path across the three games.

Symbiogenesis itself is a blockchain-based narrative game featuring over 10,000 unique character NFTs. The story is delivered through six chapters, comprising over 1.1 million words of interactive storytelling. Each NFT character allows players to access specific episodes and make decisions that influence the game world. Despite the limited popularity of the NFT collection so far, the game is now positioned as a central element in Sony’s cross-title web3 gaming strategy.

Evermoon and Sleepagotchi Add Depth and Accessibility

Evermoon is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that combines competitive 5v5 gameplay with NFT-based rewards and profile customization. Built on Soneium, it introduces a collection of digital stickers linked to Symbiogenesis, giving players exclusive in-game perks. This integration is part of Sony’s broader effort to promote interoperable content and digital assets across its blockchain network.

Sleepagotchi offers a different type of gameplay experience. After gaining traction on Telegram with over a million users in its first month, the game is launching a new LITE version on LINE in collaboration with Soneium. It encourages regular player engagement through simple daily tasks and includes exclusive content for Symbiogenesis players. Those who complete the quest in Symbiogenesis can unlock the Epic Rarity One-Horned Dragon in Sleepagotchi, reinforcing the connection between the titles.

A Strategic Direction for Sony’s Blockchain Ecosystem

Sony describes the Symbiogenesis initiative as a reflection of the collaborative spirit that defines Soneium. The three games bring together different aspects of blockchain gaming: narrative depth from Symbiogenesis, competitive gameplay from Evermoon, and mobile-friendly engagement from Sleepagotchi. Sony’s strategy is to provide a framework where digital ownership, storytelling, and gameplay can extend across different platforms and game types.

The decision by Square Enix to continue Symbiogenesis on Soneium suggests growing interest among established publishers in leveraging blockchain infrastructure to create connected, web3-native experiences. As Soneium continues to develop, Sony aims to attract more titles and developers that are looking for an ecosystem built on interoperability and creative flexibility.
