Space Nation Inc. has announced that development is underway for a live-action TV series based on the expanding Space Nation universe, led by industry veterans Roland Emmerich and Marco Weber. Known for works such as Independence Day and The Thirteenth Floor, Emmerich and Weber have collaborated to create an interconnected transmedia franchise that spans gaming, animation, and now live-action television. The upcoming series will explore the backstory of the popular game Space Nation Online, which takes place in a distant star cluster where humanity has settled after the destruction of Earth.

What is Space Nation?

Space Nation, the web3 MMORPG, places players in the captain's chair of their very own spaceship. As a captain awakened from hibernation by the Parousians, descendants of the human race, players must navigate a galaxy teetering on the brink of war. The appearance of ghost ships and the whispers of unknown dangers set a tense backdrop for an epic spacefaring adventure.

Diverse Gameplay

Players in Space Nation find themselves in a richly detailed universe filled with vast star systems and numerous planets, all within a 100,000-kilometer radius. Utilizing warp drives, they can traverse the extensive distances between Cluster Galaxies, Stellar Systems, and Planetary Systems. The game features ships of various sizes, from 30-meter single-player warships to colossal 20-kilometer Galaxy Motherships, offering a diverse range of gameplay experiences.

Transmedia Vision for Space Nation

The upcoming TV series builds on Space Nation Inc.'s ambitious transmedia strategy, designed to reach audiences across multiple platforms. With the game Space Nation Online as its core, the IP has already gained significant traction in the gaming world since its soft launch in September 2023.

The game's MMORPG format invites players to join a massive online community set in the Telikos Cluster, where players explore a universe marked by an alien invasion that forced humanity to leave Earth. Space Nation Inc. was founded by Emmerich, Weber, and gaming industry veterans Jerome Wu and Tony Tang. With $50 million in funding, the team set out to create an expansive IP that bridges video games, online content, and TV. With the help of zkEVM technology from Immutable, a leading web3 platform, the game is designed to handle high player numbers and offer scalability and low transaction costs—key features for a web3-integrated gaming experience.

In addition to the game, Space Nation's animated shorts have expanded the universe further. The shorts were executive-produced by Emmerich and Weber, with creative direction from filmmaker Martin Weisz. They center on Zoey, an alien teen space pirate beloved by fans.  In a humorous narrative, Zoey's character tries to go viral online, giving fans a unique perspective on the Space Nation universe.

Winona Weber, who voiced and performed motion capture for Zoey, co-wrote the shorts with Space Nation Online's lead writer Jess Lebow. These shorts were released before the game’s official launch, providing early insights into the game’s setting and characters. Emmerich and Weber are dedicated to crafting a truly interconnected world for a global audience.

Emmerich has noted that the collaboration with the game development team has been “a singularly unique creative experience,” providing opportunities to build out the storyline in new and imaginative ways. Weber echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the IP’s potential to bring together multiple storytelling mediums to expand the Space Nation universe and engage fans worldwide.
