Somnia Records 1 Billion Transactions

Somnia records over 1 billion transactions on its testnet, with 25% driven by its on-chain game Chunked. Learn how this web3 platform is scaling blockchain for digital experiences.

The blockchain platform Somnia has surpassed 1 billion transactions on its Shannon testnet. Known for its focus on scalability and high transaction throughput, Somnia also claims to have processed 80 million transactions in a single day. This figure represents the highest daily volume reported by an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain. For comparison, Ethereum’s highest daily transaction count stands at 1.9 million, while Solana has reached 66.9 million.

Though the platform is still in its testnet phase, with its mainnet launch expected later in 2025, Somnia’s current transaction numbers reflect its aim to support large-scale digital interactions. The blockchain positions itself as a high-performance infrastructure capable of handling intensive on-chain workloads, particularly in the gaming and metaverse sectors.

Chunked Game Contributes to On-chain Activity

One of the primary contributors to Somnia’s transaction volume is Chunked, a fully on-chain game that operates within a Minecraft-like environment. Built on Somnia and integrated with the MSquared metaverse platform, Chunked accounted for 25% of the blockchain’s total transactions. During its first season, the game generated 250 million transactions and supported over 70,000 concurrent users. A second test version of the game is expected to launch soon.

This level of engagement highlights how gaming applications can drive significant activity on blockchains, especially when designed to operate fully on-chain. Chunked’s performance illustrates Somnia’s capacity to manage real-time, high-volume interactions in a decentralized setting.

Focus on Web3 Gaming and Ecosystem Expansion

Somnia continues to expand its footprint within the web3 gaming sector. The platform recently attracted Sparkball, a sports brawler game that had initially planned to launch on Solana and then Monad. The developers ultimately selected Somnia, citing its infrastructure capabilities. In addition to Sparkball, other games such as the roguelike RPG Variance, the collectible card game DarkTable, and the survival game NightSpawn have announced plans to launch on Somnia.

To further support web3 development, Somnia has initiated two grant programs. A collaboration with Uprising Games includes a $10 million fund aimed at helping web2 game developers transition to web3. Another initiative, Dream Catalyst, offers a separate $10 million grant pool for projects related to games, metaverse applications, DeFi, and social platforms. These programs reflect Somnia’s intent to build a comprehensive ecosystem that supports a range of digital experiences.

Blockchain as Scalable Digital Infrastructure

Somnia’s leadership views the recent transaction milestone as a validation of its broader goals. Co-founder Paul Thomas stated that reaching 1 billion transactions reflects the need for blockchain infrastructure capable of supporting real-time, interconnected experiences beyond traditional use cases. He also acknowledged the role of the community and partner ecosystem in helping the platform achieve this scale.

Co-founder Herman Narula added that Somnia is designed not only for crypto-native users but also for mainstream digital applications. He emphasized that blockchain needs to function as an operating system capable of supporting millions of users rather than just serving as a data layer. Somnia’s approach aligns with this outlook, aiming to deliver a scalable and flexible environment for future digital platformsplatforms.

Looking Ahead to Mainnet Launch

Although Somnia’s current performance is based on its testnet, the platform is actively preparing for its mainnet launch scheduled for late 2025. The current transaction volumes and developer activity suggest a growing interest in its capabilities, particularly from projects seeking scalable and fully on-chain infrastructure. As blockchain applications continue to evolve, Somnia positions itself as a platform designed to meet both technical demands and user expectations in the web3 era.
