Samurai Shodown R a mobile MMORPG is now live on the Sui blockchain. The game integrates web3 features such as dynamic NFTs and real-time multiplayer, no prior crypto knowledge needed.
SNK has officially launched Samurai Shodown R, a new mobile multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), built on the Sui blockchain. Developed in partnership with Lumiwave, the title introduces real-time multiplayer gameplay and on-chain progression, while remaining accessible to players unfamiliar with blockchain or cryptocurrency technologies.

Samurai Shodown R incorporates several blockchain-based systems developed on the Sui platform to support its gameplay, economy, and player interactions. Among these features is zkLogin, which allows players to sign in using familiar web2 credentials such as Google or Apple accounts. This eliminates the need for crypto wallets or seed phrases, lowering the entry barrier for users who have no prior web3 experience.
In-game assets in Samurai Shodown R include dynamic non-fungible tokens (NFTs), such as Mount NFTs, that evolve in real time as players progress. These NFTs develop from level 1 to level 20, gaining new visual elements and attributes with each stage, and culminate in a final form stored entirely on-chain. This progression adds a layer of continuity and personalization to the player's journey.
The game also makes use of shared objects, a feature that enables multiple players to interact with the same in-game assets simultaneously. This functionality supports core multiplayer experiences, such as clan-based quests and player-versus-player (PvP) combat. Additionally, a closed-loop token system is used to keep the in-game currency within the game ecosystem. Through this system, clan leaders are rewarded for completing group-oriented quests that benefit all members, encouraging collaboration and long-term engagement.

Despite the technical capabilities provided by the Sui blockchain, the game does not require players to have any background in crypto or blockchain systems. All web3 elements function in the background, allowing players to focus on exploration, story-based missions, clan development, and competitive features. The game is designed to feel like a traditional MMORPG while offering additional functionality and asset ownership enabled by blockchain technology.
According to an interview with GamesBeat and Adeniyi Abiodun, Chief Product Officer at Mysten Labs, the original contributor to the Sui blockchain, Samurai Shodown R demonstrates how strong game design can be supported by scalable blockchain infrastructure. He emphasized that the web3 components are designed to support the game’s systems without disrupting the core gameplay.

The original Samurai Shodown game, released in 1993, was known for its weapon-based combat mechanics and unique visual style. Over the years, the franchise has appeared in competitive fighting game tournaments and across multiple gaming platforms. With Samurai Shodown R, SNK expands the scope of the series by introducing persistent multiplayer features and reward-driven blockchain integrations. These additions aim to offer players new forms of progression and interaction within the game world.
Kangyong Yi, Co-Founder of Lumiwave, stated that the new title both respects the legacy of the Samurai Shodown franchise and brings in blockchain-based mechanics designed to reward player activity and cooperation. The game’s design emphasizes returning engagement by offering evolving content and incentives tied to collaborative efforts.

Samurai Shodown R will also be available on the upcoming SuiPlay0X1, a handheld gaming device developed in collaboration with Playtron. The device is built to support both web2 and web3 games and is equipped to run PC and blockchain-native titles. The first round of preorders for the SuiPlay0X1 has already sold out, with shipments expected to begin soon. Details regarding the release of Samurai Shodown R on the device will be announced at a later date.
Sui, the blockchain powering the game, is a Layer 1 smart contract platform built to support secure, private, and fast digital asset transactions. Designed using the Move programming language, Sui supports parallel transaction execution and sub-second finality, making it well-suited for real-time applications like multiplayer games. With scalable processing and low transaction costs, the platform is positioned to support a range of high-performance decentralized applications.
Samurai Shodown R marks a new phase for both SNK and the broader web3 gaming landscape, offering an experience that combines accessible gameplay with underlying blockchain systems designed to enhance long-term engagement and digital ownership.
