A recent discussion at the Dice Summit in Las Vegas has sparked speculation about the release date of Sony’s next gaming console, the PlayStation 6. Shuhei Yoshida, a former Sony executive with 38 years at the company—31 of which were dedicated to PlayStation—shared his thoughts with GamesBeat on when the PS6 might arrive. While Yoshida made it clear that he does not have direct information about the console’s development, he suggested that 2028 could be a likely release window, following the pattern of previous PlayStation cycles.
Predictions for PS6 Release in 2028: What to Expect
The PlayStation 5 has been on the market since 2020, and while the PS5 Pro is expected to extend the console’s lifecycle, the release of a next-generation PlayStation remains a key topic of discussion. Yoshida noted that although past PlayStation generations typically followed a seven-year cycle, the challenges faced during the PS5’s launch may result in an extended timeline. The early years of the PS5 were impacted by supply chain disruptions, semiconductor shortages, and limited availability due to high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. These issues led to a slower adoption rate, which may push Sony to delay the PS6’s launch to ensure the PS5 reaches its full market potential.
Yoshida also pointed out that industry leaks suggest Microsoft may be planning to release its next gaming console in 2028. If accurate, this could mean that both Sony and Microsoft are preparing for a similar launch window, potentially ensuring that game developers have a clear timeframe for working on next-generation titles. Synchronizing console releases across platforms can provide a smoother transition for game studios, allowing them to create and optimize games for new hardware simultaneously.
During his conversation, Yoshida reflected on how the pandemic affected not only console production but also the broader gaming industry. He explained that companies, including Sony, made significant investments in response to increased demand for entertainment during lockdowns. However, as market conditions returned to normal, adjustments had to be made. He described the current slowdown in the gaming industry as an “overreaction” to the pandemic, suggesting that under normal circumstances, growth would have been more stable over the years. This reassessment of market conditions may also be influencing Sony’s decision-making regarding the PS6’s release.

While Yoshida’s insights provide a valuable perspective, it is important to note that he is no longer involved in Sony’s decision-making process. After spending the last six years leading PlayStation Indies, he left the company in February 2024. His prediction, though based on experience, does not confirm an official timeline for the PS6’s release. However, given his extensive background in the industry, his expectations align with current trends and strategic considerations.
For gamers, this means that the next PlayStation console is likely still several years away. The PS5 and its upgraded models will remain Sony’s primary focus for the foreseeable future. If the PS6 does arrive in 2028, the hope is that the gaming industry will have learned from past supply chain disruptions, ensuring a smoother launch without the availability issues that plagued the PS5’s early years.
