Nintendo Switch 2 Sells 947k+ Units in Japan

Nintendo Switch 2 posts nearly 950,000 sales in its first week in Japan, with Mario Kart World hitting over 780,000 copies sold. Here’s what the launch means for Nintendo.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has hit the ground running in Japan, selling an impressive 947,931 units during its first week on shelves, according to data from Famitsu. This is a significant jump compared to the original Switch’s launch week sales of 333,000 units in the same market, marking a strong start for Nintendo’s newest console.

Alongside the hardware, the launch title Mario Kart World also performed exceptionally well, moving 782,566 physical copies from June 2 to June 8. This easily outpaces the debut of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the original Switch, which sold around 284,000 copies during its first week.

Nintendo’s Japanese market strategy appears to be paying off. The reported sales number doesn’t include digital sales through the My Nintendo Store, so the total could push past 1.1 million units sold domestically. Notably, Nintendo released a Japanese language-only version of the Switch 2 priced at 49,980 Yen (about $350), which is considerably cheaper than the price seen in other regions, where it typically costs over $450. This pricing likely helped boost sales in Nintendo’s home market.

Japan remains a key focus for Nintendo, and these early figures show that the company’s approach with the Switch 2 is resonating well with gamers. The strong launch sales suggest there is solid enthusiasm for both the new console and its lineup of games, starting with Mario Kart World.
