Mysten Labs recently announced that the mobile MMORPG Shodown Samurai R will join the upcoming lineup for Sui’s web3-enabled handheld gaming console, the SuiPlay 0X1. This marks another major addition to SuiPlay 0X1’s initial game catalog following the recent announcement of the PC shooter Xociety, positioning Sui as a new player in the web3 gaming market.
The SuiPlay 0X1 console, developed to cater to the growing demand for blockchain-integrated gaming, is expected to bring fresh dynamics into player-driven engagement. The handheld device is now in its pre-sale phase, retailing at $599, with an anticipated release in 2025.

Originally launched in 1993 by SNK and reimagined in 2019, Shodown Samurai R is being rebooted to leverage blockchain technology and align with current gaming market demands. Developed by South Korean studio LumiWave, previously known as OnBuff, in collaboration with SNK, the game promises a range of features designed to enhance the player experience, including the introduction of dynamic NFTs.
These NFTs will adapt and evolve as players progress through the game, allowing for a personalized gaming journey unique to each user. Anthony Palma, Mysten Labs’ Head of Gaming Partnerships and Investments, emphasized the significance of the game’s launch, stating:
“The launch of Samurai Shodown R on the SuiPlay 0X1 exemplifies how web3 gaming can offer compelling, player-driven experiences without the traditional barriers of entry like wallets or gas fees. With Sui’s unique infrastructure, LumiWave is able to deliver a truly seamless web3 experience, where features like evolving NFTs and in-game asset ownership are not just concepts but fully realized.”

Powered by the Sui blockchain, the SuiPlay 0X1 aims to provide users with an accessible, wallet-free entry point into web3 gaming. This infrastructure allows gamers to customize their characters through a range of job roles and skills, participate in in-game events, interact with other players, and engage in the trading of in-game assets.
The Sui blockchain’s integration is designed to simplify access to decentralized features, helping players benefit from a web3 experience without needing advanced technical knowledge. This integration between gaming and blockchain technology is intended to move the industry toward a new standard where true ownership and evolving digital assets are central to the user experience.
LumiWave CTO Hanho Seo explained the impact of Sui’s technology on Shodown Samurai R, noting: “The combination of SSR’s dynamic gameplay and Sui’s cutting-edge blockchain technology allows us to unlock an entirely new level of player engagement and ownership. With features like evolving NFTs and true ownership of in-game assets, Samurai Shodown R will deliver a truly immersive and player-driven experience.”
SuiPlay 0X1 Handheld
The addition of a high-profile game like Shodown Samurai R to the SuiPlay 0X1’s roster demonstrates Mysten Labs' strategic approach in targeting dedicated gaming communities interested in immersive gameplay and blockchain-backed ownership. By bringing blockchain functionality to a handheld console, Sui is poised to appeal to both traditional gamers and web3 enthusiasts, offering an accessible way to experience web3 gaming features without the need for external wallets or additional blockchain-specific transactions.
As Sui continues to build its gaming ecosystem, Shodown Samurai R may serve as a proof-of-concept for future games on the SuiPlay 0X1. If the device achieves strong market traction, it could position Mysten Labs and LumiWave as notable players in the web3 gaming industry, potentially inspiring more developers to explore blockchain-integrated game design.
The SuiPlay 0X1 and games like Shodown Samurai R represent a step toward broader blockchain adoption in gaming, where ease of access, seamless integration, and player-centric mechanics redefine engagement. As the device nears its anticipated 2025 release, Mysten Labs' approach highlights the ongoing evolution of gaming in the web3 era, bringing blockchain functionality to the handheld gaming market.
