Oxalis Games has released a comprehensive March update for Moonfrost, its upcoming life simulation farming RPG. This latest development update provides an overview of the progress made in recent months, outlines new gameplay features, and offers insight into how the game is preparing for its Early Access release, now scheduled for the second half of May 2025.
Moonfrost Major March Updates and Open Loot Integration
Developed by Oxalis Games, Moonfrost has captured significant attention within the gaming industry, winning the trophy for “Best Art Direction” at our 2024 GAM3 Awards. The game is being developed with contributions from the lead developer of Stardew Valley Mobile, bringing expertise in farm-life simulation mechanics. Unlike traditional games in the genre, Moonfrost integrates elements of decentralization, player-driven economies, and ownership of in-game assets, all of which are enhanced by optional web3 technology.
Oxalis Games has also built a strong community around Moonfrost, achieving over 50,000 organic sign-ups without investing in marketing. The game was featured as the lead indie title at EGX-Comic Con London 2024 and remains one of the top 20 most wishlisted games on Epic Games. This success highlights the studio’s ability to attract and retain players through a community-driven approach.
Moonfrost Wins "Best Art Direction" at Our GAM3 Awards
According to the update, Moonfrost is on track for a mid to late May 2025 launch window. This refined timeline follows previous development cycles and replaces the previously planned Alpha Release 6. Instead, the team has shifted focus to preparing a more complete version of the game for Early Access, which is expected to be available for PC via the Epic Games Store, with a mobile version to be considered later on.
One of the most discussed additions in the March update is the implementation of a fishing mechanic. This feature emerged as one of the most requested by the community and was recently tested during a public playtest. Feedback from that session has been largely positive, with players finding fishing both relaxing and enjoyable. Many participants indicated a preference for daily in-game tasks centered around fishing rather than other available mechanics. Suggestions from the community have also pointed to possible future expansions of the feature, such as the inclusion of fishing leaderboards, tournaments, and cooperative multiplayer modes.
Moonfrost: Travel to Mountain
The update also introduces a new location known as the Mountain map. This large new area is designed to enhance exploration and will include various gameplay elements such as zoned progression, resource collection, and location-specific fishing opportunities. Each fishing spot within the map will offer a different selection of fish, encouraging players to explore more of the game world. There are early-stage discussions around eventually turning this map into a multiplayer or shared experience, although such features are likely to be introduced in later updates.
Beyond the headline features, the developers are continuing to expand the game’s core systems. Work is underway on several mechanics, including cooking, livestock management, storage solutions such as chests, and a task log system that allows for tracking multiple objectives tied to different non-player characters. Server performance improvements have also been made to ensure smoother gameplay during Early Access. These changes aim to build on the foundation set during the closed alpha phase and provide a more robust gameplay experience.
Rarity Tiers Explained
As part of the game’s ongoing development, Oxalis Games is also preparing new systems related to progression and item value. A set of nine rarity tiers is being introduced, each with its own benefits. These rarity traits are expected to play a role in the in-game economy, and a detailed whitepaper outlining the full economic structure and progression systems is scheduled for release in the coming weeks. This document will help players understand how to maximize rewards and engage more strategically with the game’s systems.
Moonfrost’s partnership with Open Loot is another key part of the update. This collaboration is intended to lower the barrier to entry for players unfamiliar with web3 technologies. Through Open Loot, players will not need to create their own crypto wallets or manage seed phrases. Instead, a secure wallet will be generated automatically, enabling players to maintain ownership of in-game items without requiring blockchain knowledge.
The partnership also eliminates the need for gas fees and allows for seamless item trading without interrupting the gameplay experience. Players will be able to acquire in-game assets using familiar payment methods such as PayPal or credit cards. NFTs within the game will appear as standard game items, providing the benefits of digital ownership while preserving the feel of a traditional gaming experience.
Moonfrost and Open Loot Integration
With the March update, Oxalis Games continues to build toward a broader Early Access release. By introducing new features, improving gameplay systems, and partnering with Open Loot to simplify web3 elements, the studio aims to offer a more accessible and engaging game. The development team has confirmed that further updates will follow as the Early Access date approaches, and more information, including the economic whitepaper, will be shared soon.
