According to data from Box Office Mojo, the global cumulative for the first two days stood at $301 million.

This result represents a notable moment for Microsoft, which has faced challenges in translating its gaming properties into successful screen adaptations. Earlier projects, such as the Halo series on Paramount+, did not meet expectations in terms of critical reception or cultural impact. The success of the Minecraft Movie offers Microsoft a rare breakthrough in this area, especially as other companies have recently found greater success bringing their gaming franchises to film and television.
Minecraft was created by Mojang founder Marcus "Notch" Persson and sold to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion. The game has maintained a strong player base under Microsoft’s ownership, with 204 million monthly active users reported as of December. The film’s commercial success adds another layer to the franchise’s growth and highlights its continued relevance more than a decade after its initial release.
The Minecraft Movie was directed by Jared Hess and features performances by Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and other notable actors. Although the film received generally weak reviews from critics, audience turnout remained strong. The film’s performance suggests that the franchise’s fanbase—particularly younger viewers familiar with the game—played a key role in driving ticket sales, regardless of critical opinion.
The film’s strong start places it alongside recent successes in the genre of game-based entertainment. Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $1.3 billion globally in 2023, while Sega has seen multiple successful releases from its Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Sony also experienced significant success with The Last of Us series on HBO. With this context, Minecraft’s strong box office opening signals Microsoft’s entrance into a competitive but growing segment of the entertainment industry.
As the Minecraft Movie continues its theatrical run, box office analysts expect further gains. Its early performance may position it among the top-grossing releases of the year and could influence future decisions related to game-based media projects across the industry.
