MapleStory Reveals Roadmap for 2026

Nexpace outlines the next phase of MapleStory Universe, including over a dozen mobile and web-based extensions to MapleStory N, aiming to broaden access and reduce barriers by early 2026.

Nexpace, the blockchain-focused division of Nexon, has announced its roadmap for expanding the MapleStory Universe following the recent launch of MapleStory N. The expansion plan includes the development of more than a dozen mobile and web-based experiences intended to complement the existing PC game. These additions are scheduled for release by the first quarter of 2026 and are designed to broaden the ecosystem’s accessibility and functionality.

MapleStory N, a PC-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), launched last month as the first major title in the MapleStory Universe. The game retains the side-scrolling format of the original MapleStory, a franchise that has attracted over 260 million players since its inception. Unlike earlier versions, MapleStory N integrates blockchain technology by representing in-game items as NFTs on the Avalanche L1 gaming network, known as Henesys. These NFTs can be traded on a dedicated marketplace, offering players new ways to interact with their in-game assets.

New Platforms to Reduce Barriers to Entry

Nexpace aims to reduce the barriers to participating in MapleStory Universe by offering lighter, more accessible experiences. Keith Kim, head of strategy at Nexpace, noted that relying solely on a PC-based client creates limitations, especially for players with less time or access to high-performance devices. To address this, the development team plans to introduce mobile and browser-based applications that allow players to engage with the core mechanics of the game—such as character progression, item enhancement, and quest participation—without needing to download large files or be tied to a desktop computer.

The first of these supplementary experiences is expected to launch in late July or early August in the form of a web app that enables item enhancement. This is part of a broader effort to allow players to complete certain game functions in shorter, more casual sessions. By decoupling some game features from the main client, Nexpace aims to make MapleStory more suitable for players managing work, school, or other responsibilities.

Additional Features and Long-Term Goals

Among the planned features is a rental system that would allow players to pay others to level up their characters. While still under discussion, this service is being considered for release by early 2026. In an interview with Decrypt, Kim explained that the concept is intended to help time-constrained users participate more meaningfully in the game without committing to extensive grinding themselves.

Nexpace is also engaging with third-party developers to build new experiences within the MapleStory Universe. Although developers currently need to obtain approval and API keys from Nexpace, the long-term objective is to move toward a permissionless model. This shift is expected to begin later this year with the introduction of a developer community center, tentatively scheduled for the third or fourth quarter.

As part of this future ecosystem, developers who contribute successfully will be eligible for rewards in the form of NXPC tokens. According to Kim, 80% of the NXPC token supply is allocated for contributor rewards, and the company hopes to see a more decentralized development environment over time. For now, Nexpace remains the primary driver of the ecosystem’s growth, but the expectation is that this will gradually change as more contributors become involved.

A Strategic Shift for a Long-Running Franchise

MapleStory Universe represents a strategic evolution of the long-running MapleStory franchise. By integrating web3 technology and diversifying the ways in which players can interact with the game, Nexpace is adapting the franchise to meet the needs of a maturing player base. With a roadmap that includes mobile apps, web browser-based tools, and blockchain-enabled features, the company aims to create a more flexible and inclusive ecosystem for both players and developers.

As the rollout of new experiences continues through 2025 and into early 2026, MapleStory Universe is positioned to offer a broader and more accessible version of its familiar gameplay to a global audience.
