Little Umbrella Acquires Discord Game

Playroom subsidiary Little Umbrella has acquired the Discord game Karaoke Battle from Mayk AI for an undisclosed fee. The acquisition includes a music licensing partnership with tech company Stingray, giving Little Umbrella access to licensed music for the game. The deal is part of the company’s broader strategy to grow its socially driven and music-based gaming offerings.

Bringing Karaoke Battle In-House

Karaoke Battle was originally built on Discord using Playroom’s multiplayer technology. Little Umbrella plans to bring the game fully in-house, aiming to expand its music- and rhythm-based game portfolio. CEO Tabish Ahmed explained that the company sees opportunities to grow the title across multiple platforms beyond Discord, highlighting the potential for a wider audience reach.

“The team is excited to bring it in-house and expand our portfolio with music- and rhythm-based games,” Ahmed said in an interview with PocketGamer. “We see strong potential to evolve it—not just on Discord, but across new surfaces and platforms as well. On a personal note, it was great to do this deal with Stefan Heinrich. We've remained good friends for over 10 years since partnering together at YouTube.”

Original Developers Comment on the Transition

Mayk AI co-founder and CEO Stefan Heinrich shared his thoughts on the acquisition, noting that the game was initially designed to explore new social ways for people to engage with music. “It’s exciting to see it find a long-term home with a team that truly understands party games and next platform-native experiences,” Heinrich said. He also highlighted his longstanding relationship with Ahmed, emphasizing the trust and care that Little Umbrella brings to the project.

Future Plans for Music and Rhythm Games

Little Umbrella intends to continue developing Karaoke Battle as part of its expanding catalog of music and rhythm-focused titles. The acquisition supports the company’s efforts to offer socially interactive gaming experiences and explore opportunities that align with web3 technologies in the gaming space.
