Layer Raises $6.5 Million to Expand AI Tools

Layer, an AI-powered content creation platform designed specifically for game developers, has raised $6.5 million in seed funding. The investment will support the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its suite of production tools used to generate 2D, 3D, and video assets for game development. The platform has gained widespread adoption among mobile studios and is now preparing to enter the PC and console game development markets.

A Platform Designed for Game Developers

Layer functions as an AI application gateway for game studios, enabling teams to deploy artificial intelligence across content production workflows. The platform allows developers to build, manage, and refine visual assets while reducing the time and cost associated with traditional asset creation processes. The tool is already in use by over 200 studios, including Zynga, Tripledot, SciPlay, Huuuge Games, and Machine Zone. The company positions itself as a model-agnostic solution, allowing users to access and integrate various AI models for different creative tasks.

This flexibility means studios are not restricted to a single AI engine and can instead apply the most effective tools for specific production needs. Layer supports a wide range of use cases, including in-game assets, live operations content, and marketing materials. According to an interview with GamesBeat, CEO Volkan Gurel, the platform’s appeal lies in its ability to unify multiple AI models within a single, accessible interface. He emphasized that the platform is built around the needs of artists and creative teams, rather than positioning AI as a replacement for human creativity.

Leadership with Industry and Technical Expertise

Layer was founded by Volkan Gurel and Burcu Hakguder, both of whom bring extensive experience in AI and the games industry. Gurel studied at MIT under pioneers in artificial intelligence and later held technical leadership positions at companies such as Coinbase and Airware. His career has focused on applying AI to practical, scalable systems. Burcu Hakguder, the company’s Chief Revenue Officer, previously held senior roles at Unity Technologies, where she was involved in building revenue channels and developing partnerships.

At Layer, she leads business development efforts and manages relationships with key partners across the global games market. Her background in gaming services and product growth has contributed to Layer’s early traction with mobile studios. Gurel credited Hakguder’s industry connections and experience as instrumental in shaping Layer’s go-to-market strategy and establishing trust within the developer community.

Expanding Beyond Mobile

While Layer initially focused on mobile games, the new funding will allow the company to scale its platform for PC and console studios. Gurel noted that the company’s approach to AI has resonated with mobile developers, and he expects a similar response from studios working on larger-scale projects. The platform’s ability to manage complex production needs in a customizable way makes it suitable for a range of game development environments.

The company’s leadership emphasized that Layer is not a point solution. Instead, it is a comprehensive platform built with scalability and adaptability in mind. This approach allows developers to integrate AI in ways that align with their creative workflows and maintain control over the final output. The team believes this will be a critical factor as more studios adopt AI for content creation.

Focus on Human-Centered AI

One of Layer’s core principles is that AI should enhance, rather than replace, human creativity. The platform is designed to keep artists in control of the creative process, providing tools that are intuitive and flexible. Gurel described the future of game development as one where artists lead production efforts, using AI to scale output and improve efficiency without compromising on quality or originality.

Gurel also addressed broader concerns about AI replacing creative roles. He stated that Layer envisions a future in which AI assists artists in producing higher volumes of content with more personalization and localization. The goal is to enable smaller teams to compete at a higher level, while also supporting larger studios in scaling their production pipelines.

Industry Support and Outlook

Investors in the funding round expressed confidence in Layer’s technology and leadership. Riccardo Zacconi, co-founder of King, said he was impressed by the team’s ability to deploy AI in a way that simplifies integration for developers. Akin Babayigit highlighted the company’s understanding of game development and its potential to become a standard within the industry. With a team of 16 employees, Layer uses AI across its own operations, applying the same tools it offers to its clients. Gurel noted that the team’s efficiency and deep technical knowledge have been key in building a platform capable of addressing real production challenges.

As the games industry continues to evolve, Layer plans to expand its team, develop new features, and broaden its reach into other segments of game development. The company remains focused on supporting creators through practical AI applications that align with the needs of modern game studios. Layer’s roadmap includes continued development of tools that can support a wide range of production needs, ensuring that game developers of all sizes have access to efficient, scalable, and artist-centric AI solutions.
