India leads the world in mobile game downloads, yet struggles with in-app purchase revenue. Explore key market trends, genre performance, and top games in the 2025 landscape.
India continues to be the largest mobile gaming market globally in terms of downloads, according to Sensor Tower’s latest analysis for the period from April 2024 to March 2025. During this timeframe, India recorded 8.45 billion game downloads, which is more than twice the total of the next largest Asian market, Indonesia, which saw 3.34 billion installs. However, the volume of downloads declined by 8.7 percent compared to the previous year, marking the second consecutive year of decline and indicating a slowdown in user acquisition growth.
Despite its dominant position by downloads, India ranks only eighth in Asia in terms of in-app purchase (IAP) revenue, with earnings exceeding $400 million during the same period. This contrast highlights the monetization challenges developers face in the region. While revenue is growing, it is doing so from a low base, and the rate of growth is decelerating.

The Indian mobile gaming audience is primarily composed of young males, with 86 percent of players identifying as male and 77 percent falling within the 18 to 34 age group. This demographic distribution is similar to that seen in other large gaming markets. Genre preferences among players are also in line with global trends, although certain categories perform uniquely in the Indian context.
Simulator games lead in terms of downloads, accounting for 22 percent of the total, followed by arcade games at 19 percent and puzzle games at 16 percent. However, revenue is concentrated in fewer genres. Shooter games contribute to half of all IAP revenue, reflecting a more focused monetization pattern compared to the broad variety of genres popular for downloads.

Looking more closely at individual genre trends, driving and flight simulators recorded the highest number of downloads despite a 2.6 percent year-over-year decline. Platformers and runners came in second, although their downloads dropped by 18 percent. Board games showed slight positive growth of 0.8 percent.
From a revenue perspective, Battle Royale games, particularly Garena Free Fire and PUBG Mobile, continue to lead the market and reported a combined growth of 5.7 percent year-over-year. Match-3 games saw a decline of 7.4 percent in revenue, while Coin Looters, which include titles like Coin Master, declined by 5.8 percent. The strongest revenue growth came from location-based games, led by Pokemon GO, which grew by 548.8 percent during the period. Other genres with notable revenue increases included sandboxes at 59.6 percent, realistic sports simulations at 26.6 percent, and 4X strategy games at 9.4 percent.

India's most downloaded games during the reported period were largely region-specific. Popular titles included Ludo King, Zupee, Dream11, Indian Bikes Driving 3D, Cricket League, WinZO Ludo, and Carrom Pool. These games are heavily tailored to Indian tastes and cultural preferences. In contrast, the list of top-grossing games was dominated by international titles. Garena Free Fire, Battlegrounds Mobile India, Coin Master, Candy Crush Saga, and eFootball were the highest revenue earners. Among these, only Battlegrounds Mobile India carries any local cultural relevance.
Pokemon GO stood out for its exceptional revenue growth, though the reasons for its sudden popularity remain unclear. Other games such as Last War: Survival and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang also entered the revenue rankings. The latter, with its emphasis on social gameplay, may find sustained success in the Indian market.

Ludo King remains the most downloaded mobile game in India, a position it has held since 2017. It has now been downloaded over 1.25 billion times, and its average monthly download figures continue to grow. The game's success is largely due to its strong cultural resonance, as it digitizes a classic Indian board game familiar to most users.
In addition to gameplay familiarity, Ludo King benefits from effective marketing strategies that emphasize casual family-friendly themes and social interaction. These messages align well with user preferences in India. Features such as voice chat also contribute to user retention by supporting the social aspects of the gaming experience.

Indian game developers receive the majority of their downloads from the domestic market. However, their revenue is largely generated abroad. The main international markets for downloads are Indonesia, the United States, and Brazil, while the highest revenue is earned from users in the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom.
Among Indian developers, Gametion's Ludo King leads in downloads, followed by Indian Bikes Driving 3D from Rohit Gaming Studio and Dream11 from DREAM11 FANTASY PRIVATE LIMITED. In terms of revenue, the leading Indian titles include Ludo STAR by Gameberry Labs, Crossword Jam: Fun Word Search by Playsimple Games, and Coloring Games for Kids 2-6 from Internet Design Zone.

India remains a key global player in mobile gaming by download volume, yet it continues to face monetization challenges. While genre diversity and user engagement remain high, translating these strengths into sustainable revenue growth remains a complex task.
The continued rise of certain international titles and the limited monetization of culturally specific games suggest that the Indian market requires more targeted strategies to unlock its full revenue potential. As the landscape evolves, stakeholders in mobile gaming, including developers and publishers, will need to adapt their approach to better align with the unique characteristics of the Indian market.
