Spider Tanks was first developed in 2021 through a partnership between GAMEDIA and Gala Games. The project was pitched as a pioneering Web3 esports title, featuring customizable NFT-based tank components and its own in-game token. Early enthusiasm from the community helped the game gain traction, but by mid 2024 the relationship between the two companies had deteriorated. GAMEDIA accused Gala of shifting focus away from active games and failing to provide the necessary support, which eventually escalated into a legal dispute when Gala attempted to claim ownership of the Spider Tanks IP.

That case was dismissed by a California court in September 2024 due to lack of jurisdiction, leaving control of the property with GAMEDIA. Following the ruling, the Dutch studio kept a low profile, limiting its public activity to occasional hints of ongoing development. Toward the end of 2024 and into early 2025, subtle posts began to suggest renewed progress, including a public note of thanks to Immutable for visiting their studio, sparking fresh speculation about a new chapter for Spider Tanks.
