Telegram-based web3 shooter Golden Guardians: Survivor ended service on June 27. OVERTAKE confirms game closure and secures $TAKE rewards for players.

Golden Guardians: Survivor, a Telegram-based web3 survival shooter developed by OVERTAKE, officially ended service on June 27. The announcement was made through the game's Discord server, where the development team thanked players for their participation and support.

The team also confirmed that all token allocations tied to the game, including $TAKE rewards, have been safely preserved through the OVERTAKE Launchpool system. After the shutdown, players will lose access to the game and all related in-game data. OVERTAKE encouraged its community to make the most of the final days of gameplay, aiming to provide a meaningful conclusion to the experience.

Launched during OVERTAKE’s GameFest campaign in late 2024, Golden Guardians: Survivor attracted attention through a play-to-airdrop model that combined casual shooter gameplay with blockchain-based incentives. The game was introduced alongside an $85 million token reward pool in $OVT, OVERTAKE’s native token, which was rebranded to $TAKE in early 2025. The core gameplay placed users in a top-down arena where they fought off continuous waves of zombies and bosses.

Each game session required energy, which would gradually recharge over time. As players advanced, they gained experience points and unlocked evolving skills similar in structure to mechanics seen in Vampire Survivors. Golden Guardians: Survivor offered six playable characters. One character was made available for free, while the others could be accessed by spending Telegram Stars or through cryptocurrency purchases.

In-game performance was rewarded with $GG, the game’s internal currency. Players could convert $GG into gAP, or Achievement Points, which contributed to global leaderboard rankings and unlocked access to $TAKE airdrop rewards. Throughout its lifespan, the game hosted seasonal events, and its second season distributed a total of five million $TAKE to high-performing players.

OVERTAKE’s Role and GameFest Campaign

OVERTAKE, a decentralized web3 games publisher, is known for its integration of blockchain mechanics into casual gaming experiences. The company operates on Immutable’s blockchain infrastructure, which provides gas-free gameplay and scalable digital asset ownership.

Golden Guardians: Survivor was one of the key titles featured during GameFest, a promotional campaign that highlighted several games including Somnis and The Red One. GameFest aimed to introduce players to a range of web3 experiences while distributing token-based incentives through coordinated airdrops.

The concept behind Golden Guardians: Survivor reflected OVERTAKE’s broader strategy of combining accessible gameplay with decentralized reward systems. It was one of the earliest Telegram casual mini-games to incorporate launchpool-based airdrops at scale, positioning it as a test case for future blockchain-integrated gaming models within social platforms.

A Difficult Period for Blockchain Gaming

The closure of Golden Guardians: Survivor is part of a broader trend affecting the blockchain gaming sector in recent months. In May, several games ended their services due to financial difficulties and lack of continued investment. Ember Sword ceased operations on May 22 following funding constraints.

Nyan Heroes, despite attracting over a million users, also shut down after failing to secure new backing. Tatsumeeko: Lumina Fates was cancelled after a series of public playtests, with developers citing a lack of clear direction.  Additional closures include Wonder Wars and Blast Royale, the latter scheduled to shut down on June 30.

These developments reflect ongoing challenges in the web3 gaming space, particularly for projects that were launched during the growth period of 2021 and 2022. Many of these studios are now facing pressure due to market delays, reduced investor confidence, and changing user expectations.

Final Thoughts

Golden Guardians: Survivor offered a simplified, accessible entry point into web3 gaming through its integration with Telegram and the use of blockchain-based rewards. Despite a strong start and a community-focused design, the game was ultimately affected by the broader difficulties facing the sector.

While players will retain access to their $TAKE airdrop rewards, the closure highlights the instability facing many web3 gaming projects. As the market continues to evolve, developers may need to adopt more sustainable models to navigate the ongoing volatility.  Here is a list of all the games mentioned in the article:

  2. Somnis
  3. The Red One
  4. Ember Sword
