Ghost of Yōtei shifts the narrative from Tsushima to Ezo, a northern region of Japan, and introduces a new protagonist, Atsu. The game follows her pursuit of revenge against the Yōtei Six, a group responsible for a personal tragedy. Her brutal reputation has earned her the nickname of a living Onyro (a vengeful spirit from Japanese folklore) which shapes both how characters in the world respond to her and how her story is framed.

Unlike the more linear structure of its predecessor, Ghost of Yōtei places a strong emphasis on player freedom. Exploration across Ezo is designed to be self-directed, with players encouraged to investigate areas that catch their interest using a spyglass. Sucker Punch stated this is their most player-driven game to date, supported by a Clue System that dynamically points the player toward new locations and objectives based on gathered intelligence.

The variety in environments includes everything from snow-covered peaks hiding ambushes to burned-out villages left in the wake of conflict. Familiar mechanics such as Bamboo Strikes and Hot Springs return, but new systems like bounty hunting and the Altars of Reflection add additional layers to how players interact with the world.

A Revamped Combat System

Combat has received several upgrades, starting with an expanded arsenal. Atsu wields a selection of melee weapons including the katana, spear, odachi, kusarigama, and dual swords. Each weapon offers a distinct combat style and can be upgraded as the story progresses. These tools of battle allow players to adapt to different combat scenarios depending on their preferred approach. Ranged combat options now include both a bow and a firearm. The latter trades stealth for power, offering a quick way to eliminate enemies at a distance, adding tactical flexibility that builds on what was introduced in Ghost of Tsushima.

Outside of combat, players can choose to rest at campsites, cook food, play music, or meet with allies. These quieter moments are designed to enhance the connection with the world and its characters. The standard quest journal has been replaced with Atsu’s Wolf Pack, a character-focused interface that displays vendors, allies, and storylines with illustrated portraits. This approach aims to reinforce the narrative thread by tying it directly to the people encountered along the way.

Customizing Atsu’s armor plays a more prominent role in gameplay progression. New features include the ability to disarm enemies through well-timed attacks and environmental interactions that provide passive boosts. One example shown during the State of Play involved riding through a flower-covered field to gain a temporary bonus. A wolf companion was also revealed, capable of assisting in combat and serving as another link to the game’s themes of nature and survival.

Cinematic Modes and Presentation Options

Sucker Punch confirmed the return of Kurosawa Mode, the black-and-white visual filter inspired by the films of Akira Kurosawa. The studio also introduced two additional cinematic modes. Miike Mode, named after 13 Assassins director Takashi Miike, brings the camera closer to the action and adds heavier visual effects such as dirt and blood to heighten the intensity of combat scenes. Watanabe Mode, referencing Samurai Champloo creator Shinichirō Watanabe, overlays the game with lo-fi music during exploration and combat, offering a more stylized and relaxed experience.

The game also includes a standard photo mode and multiple language options. Players can choose from English voice acting, English subtitles with Japanese voice acting, or the Samurai Cinema setting, which combines a cinematic filter with fully acted Japanese dialogue and English subtitles. These presentation choices reflect Sucker Punch’s continuing commitment to offering a customizable and immersive experience.

Release Details and Launch Extras

Ghost of Yōtei will launch on October 2, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5. In addition to the base game, Sucker Punch announced that a themed PS5 console and a special edition DualSense controller will be available at launch. These limited-edition items are designed to match the aesthetic of the game and will be released alongside the standard and special editions of Ghost of Yōtei.

While no additional content was confirmed during the broadcast, the depth shown in this State of Play suggests that Ghost of Yōtei will continue to be a key focus for Sony leading into the fall. With its emphasis on player freedom, expanded combat systems, and new cinematic modes, Ghost of Yōtei appears poised to be a major addition to the PlayStation 5 library later this year. For more updates as the release date approaches, fans can expect further announcements and previews detailing the full scope of Atsu’s journey through Ezo.
