Ghost of Yōtei reveals a new trailer at Gamescom 2025, showcasing its protagonist Atsu and fresh gameplay features. A free multiplayer Legends mode is also set to arrive in 2026.
During Gamescom Opening Night Live, Sucker Punch Productions revealed a new trailer for Ghost of Yōtei, offering a closer look at the game’s protagonist, Atsu, and announcing a free multiplayer mode coming in 2026. As one of the most anticipated PlayStation 5 exclusives of next year, the trailer brought new insights into the tone, gameplay, and narrative direction of the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.

The newly released trailer focuses on Atsu, who embarks on a mission to kill the Yōtei Six after they murdered her family. The footage reveals a darker and more personal journey compared to Jin Sakai's in Ghost of Tsushima. Set against the mountainous regions inspired by northern Japan, the game aims to present a new emotional tone while preserving the studio’s signature cinematic style.
"Atsu’s character allowed us to tell a very different story, one rooted in revenge but shaped by moral choices," said Nate Fox, creative director at Sucker Punch. "We wanted players to experience her pain and determination, not just through dialogue but in every part of the world and combat."
The trailer and earlier showcases revealed several new weapons, including the kusarigama, yari spear, and dual-wielding options. These tools allow players to engage in fast, tactical fights or approach encounters through stealth. The combat system continues the tradition of fluid motion and responsive controls introduced in Tsushima, now with more variety and depth.
The world of Yōtei also emphasizes player freedom. Using tools like a spyglass to scout areas or simply wandering toward points of interest without map markers, players can chart their own path. Sucker Punch noted that environmental storytelling and organic exploration are central to the game’s philosophy.

One of the final surprises in the trailer was the reveal that Ghost of Yōtei Legends, a multiplayer mode, will arrive in 2026 as a free update. The mode features two-player story missions and four-player survival modes, continuing the successful format introduced in Ghost of Tsushima.
Andrew Goldfarb, Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch, commented, "Legends was something fans embraced wholeheartedly. For Yōtei, we’re building on that foundation with new enemy types, spiritual elements, and a reimagined co-op experience."

Though Ghost of Yōtei is not a direct continuation of Jin Sakai's story, the legacy of Ghost of Tsushima casts a long shadow. With critical acclaim and numerous Game of the Year nominations, the original set a high standard. Sucker Punch appears committed to delivering something familiar yet bold, combining its award-winning approach with fresh ideas.
Behind the scenes, the development team conducted research trips across Japan, including Mount Yōtei and Shiretoko National Park. The studio also worked with cultural consultants to ensure a respectful and accurate depiction of Ainu heritage and regional aesthetics.
