Nintendo has officially revealed new information about the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 during a dedicated Direct presentation. The event provided updates on the console’s release date, pricing, and a selection of upcoming games. Since its initial announcement, the Switch 2 has been the subject of speculation, with fans eager to learn more about its design and features. The Switch 2 introduces magnetically attaching Joy-Con controllers, USB-C ports, and a newly added "C" button, though details regarding its functionality remain unclear. Additionally, there are reports suggesting that the new Joy-Con controllers may incorporate motion controls similar to those found in computer mice. Despite ongoing speculation, Nintendo has yet to provide specifics about the internal hardware and overall performance improvements. Many anticipate upgraded processing power, but the extent of these enhancements has not been confirmed.

One of the major announcements during the Direct event was the introduction of the GameCube library to Nintendo Switch Online. For years, fans have requested GameCube titles to be included in the Nintendo Classics collection, and the Switch 2 will make this a reality. The GameCube library will be available on the same day as the console’s release, June 5, and will feature enhanced resolution options as well as customizable controls.

Nintendo is also releasing a wireless controller modeled after the original GameCube controller. This updated version will include the C button and will be available for purchase on the same day as the Switch 2. Access to the GameCube library will be limited to subscribers of the Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier, which is currently priced at $80 per year. However, it remains uncertain whether this pricing will change in the future.

Classic GameCube Titles Included in the Launch

Nintendo confirmed a selection of GameCube titles that will be available at launch, with more games expected to be added over time. Similar to other Nintendo Switch Online classic libraries, the GameCube collection will receive periodic updates, and titles may change. Among the confirmed titles is The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, a 2002 release known for its distinct cartoon-style visuals and engaging gameplay, which later inspired sequels such as Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.

The lineup also includes F-Zero GX, a high-speed racing game originally released in 2003 through a collaboration between Nintendo and Sega. This version retains the fast-paced gameplay of its predecessor while introducing a story mode featuring Captain Falcon. Multiplayer options will allow players to compete in four-person races, both online and locally.

Another title joining the GameCube library is Soulcalibur 2, a well-regarded fighting game that originally featured Link as a guest character in the GameCube version. Additionally, Super Mario Sunshine will be available, bringing back the tropical Isle Delfino adventure where Mario must clear his name and restore the island using the F.L.U.D.D. device.

Nintendo is also bringing back Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, a tactical RPG released in 2005. This installment was notable for allowing players to access bonus content if they had save data from the Game Boy Advance Fire Emblem games. The game later received a sequel, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, on the Wii.

More GameCube Titles Available on Switch 2

Other GameCube titles included in the initial lineup are Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, which serves as a follow-up to Pokemon Colosseum, another game that will be available in the collection. The series featured a unique focus on Shadow Pokemon and received positive feedback from players for its gameplay and story.

Also returning is Super Mario Strikers, known as Mario Smash Football in some regions. This game, originally released in 2005, features five-on-five soccer matches with power-ups and special moves. Luigi fans will also see the return of Luigi’s Mansion, the first game in the series that put Mario’s brother in the lead role as he explored a haunted mansion in search of his missing sibling.

Another title coming to the GameCube library is Chibi-Robo, a game about a small robot programmed to spread happiness by cleaning up its environment and collecting "Happy Points." Originally released in 2005, the game received a sequel on the Nintendo 3DS and saw later re-releases, but remains a lesser-known title among Nintendo’s classic catalog.

Final Thoughts

With the introduction of the GameCube library, Nintendo continues its efforts to bring classic titles to modern audiences through its online subscription service. The selection of games spans a variety of genres, catering to fans of adventure, racing, fighting, and role-playing games. While Nintendo has not confirmed all details about its future expansion plans, additional titles are expected to be added to the library over time.

As anticipation builds for the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the company aims to balance nostalgia with new innovations, offering both classic and modern gaming experiences. The combination of hardware improvements and an expanded game library positions the Switch 2 as a significant step forward for Nintendo’s gaming ecosystem.
