Eldarune Shuts Down Amid Funding Challenges

Blockchain gaming studio Eldarune has announced that it is officially shutting down operations. The closure is attributed to funding challenges and the broader difficulties facing the current web3 gaming market. While the studio will no longer continue development of its ecosystem, the $ELDA token will not be discontinued. Instead, it will be transferred to a new company that plans to carry forward the project’s vision in a different format.

The Eldarune team explained that the decision to close was primarily the result of financial obstacles. Like many other web3 gaming projects in recent months, the studio found it difficult to secure sustainable funding and continue its development roadmap. In a farewell message, the team highlighted its achievements, including reaching hundreds of thousands of players, topping charts during early releases, and building a strong community. However, despite these milestones, the realities of the market made it unfeasible to move forward.

The developers expressed gratitude to their supporters, noting that the project was made possible by community involvement. They emphasized that while the studio could not bring the full Eldarune story to life, the experience had been valuable and rewarding for the team.

The $ELDA Token and Next Steps

One of the most important elements of the announcement was the clarification that the $ELDA token will not be abandoned. Instead, the token is being transferred to a new company described as an independent infrastructure and technology project. Although no details about the new entity have been provided, the Eldarune team stated that the project will pursue long-term value creation for the community, albeit in a different form.

At the time of the announcement on August 29, $ELDA was still available on the centralized exchange MEXC, allowing holders to withdraw their tokens. Since then, the token has been delisted. Community discussions suggest that further details about the token’s new role and the new company will be revealed in the near future.

What About Eldarune’s Ecosystem?

Eldarune was developed as a Seedify-incubated, multi-chain web3 gaming ecosystem set in a fantasy universe. It was powered by the $ELDA token and included four separate titles. World of Elymnias was an AI-driven medieval idle RPG that allowed players to engage in PvE dungeons and PvP arenas. Heroes of Eldarune was a trading card game where players could create decks from Champion NFTs and was supported by a 50,000 IMX grant awarded in May 2024.

The ecosystem also included ELDA Rush, which combined multiplayer online battle arena gameplay with dungeon-style encounters, and Eldarune Journey, a text-based game that involved seafaring adventures with NFT assets at risk for potential rewards. Each of these projects reflected an attempt to create a broad and interconnected fantasy gaming ecosystem. With the closure of Eldarune, development across all four titles has ceased.

Mass Web3 Gaming Shutdowns

The closure of Eldarune adds to a series of recent shutdowns across the web3 gaming industry. Projects such as Pirate Nation from Proof of Play, Tokyo Beast, and Unioverse have all shut down in recent months, often citing similar issues with funding and long-term sustainability. Earlier this year, Blast Royale also shut down, though the developers opted to release the project as open source.

Eldarune’s end illustrates the ongoing challenges faced by web3 game developers. While the industry continues to experiment with new models of gameplay, token utility, and community engagement, many projects are struggling to balance creative ambitions with financial realities. The transfer of the $ELDA token to a new company indicates that the Eldarune community may still see further developments, even if the original games are no longer active.
