In a recent development, the Splinterlands team has confirmed the acquisition of its tower defense game, Soulkeep, by the studio Double Coconut, the original developers of the game.
Despite the change in ownership, Soulkeep will continue to be part of the Splinterlands platform. Double Coconut, led by CEO David Fox, will take charge of both the ongoing development and the upcoming launch of the game.
The studio has worked on blockbuster web2 games such as Heads Up and Deal or No Deal. Double Coconut is also known for its extensive web3 portfolio, including titles like BlackJack Blitz and Play with Brio. The team is set to not only develop Soulkeep but also take responsibility for its future tokenomics and community relations.
Soulkeep players can still manage their collections and engage in the NFT market through Splinterlands' website and other third-party tools. Additionally, the in-game economy will continue to be supported by Splinterlands' $SPS and $DEC tokens.
The Splinterlands team expressed optimism about the acquisition, stating, "We feel that this sale gives the Soulkeep game the best chances of success as well as providing the most value to purchasers of the Nightmare packs over the long term."
David Fox, CEO of Double Coconut, shared his excitement about the project, saying, "We are so happy to finally be launching this innovative tower defense title. Double Coconut is dedicated to growing Soulkeep into a preeminent and iconic web3 title."
Highlighting the commitment to ownership and community involvement, Fox believes that Soulkeep has the potential to attract diverse players and add new layers of fun to the gaming experience.
The game, initially slated for a 2023 release, faced delays due to Splinterlands' reorganization, leading to the change in ownership. However, both teams are working collaboratively to ensure a smooth integration between Soulkeep and the Splinterlands platform.
Splinterlands aims to showcase this integration as a model for other games looking to integrate with Splinterlands' assets in the future. As the new chapter unfolds for Soulkeep under the wing of Double Coconut, players can anticipate an exciting blend of tower defense gameplay and the proven success of the Splinterlands ecosystem.
