In a recent strategic collaboration within the NFT gaming landscape, DFZ Labs, the creators behind the renowned Deadfellaz NFT brand, has joined forces with the gaming titan Unity. The partnership is set to co-create an innovative digital trading card video game. Unity's distinguished internal development team will provide key insights and expertise to DFZ Labs throughout the game development process.
The lead artist and co-founder of DFZ Labs, Psych, reflected on the significance of this partnership, stating, "The magnitude of having Unity as a collaborator in this project is truly monumental. Our vision for the game encompasses a groundbreaking dimension of engagement and immersion for the trading card game genre. Unity emerges as the ideal partner to realize this vision."
The game for now is codenamed, RIP TCG, and is described as a "fast, violent & cinematic digital trading card game." The game has been conceived with the aim of revolutionizing the traditional card-based tabletop gaming landscape. It is set to introduce an immersive 3D combat gameplay centered around characters, extensive card customization options, a distinctive and darkly whimsical lore-rich universe, a continuous stream of fresh content through seasonal live-ops, and an array of additional features that are currently under wraps.
An intriguing aspect of DFZ Labs' approach is its intent to harness the capabilities of blockchain technology, potentially through in-game digital assets, crafting a game in the realm of web3. However, a recent blog post from the company indicates a nuanced shift in its focus. Elaborating on this evolution, DFZ Labs mentioned, "Our initial blueprint was oriented towards developing a Play-to-Earn trading card game. However, a year of in-depth research and gameplay development has only reinforced our conviction that the core aspiration of a gamer is sheer enjoyment."
DFZ Labs is not alone in its ambition to broaden its brand's universe through the medium of gaming. Noteworthy NFT brand, Bored Ape Yacht Club, has also ventured into the gaming world. This strategy serves as a dual purpose of sustaining the engagement of their existing fanbase while also drawing in new enthusiasts to their community. In a climate where sales volumes for some NFT brands have witnessed a steep decline, up to a staggering 90%, the exploration of alternate revenue avenues through gaming and merchandising has surged in importance.
Unity's stellar reputation in the gaming domain is underscored by its association with iconic franchises such as Pokémon Go and Call of Duty. Drawing from this rich legacy, DFZ Labs anticipates rolling out an initial version (alpha) of the game to a select cohort of players in the early part of the upcoming year.
