Cold River Games, a Sweden-based game development studio, has officially rebranded from its original name, Crypto Rogue Games. The change marks a new chapter for the company as it approaches the release of its flagship game, Crystalfall, which is expected to launch in late 2025. The decision to rebrand reflects the studio’s growth, as well as its desire to establish a long-term identity that aligns with its origins and creative direction.
The team at Cold River Games began its journey with a clear vision: to build a game that captures the essence of old-school action role-playing games (ARPGs), such as Diablo 2 and Path of Exile. With a strong foundation in the core mechanics and atmosphere that define these genre classics, the studio focused its early development under the name Crypto Rogue Games.
As the project evolved and the studio's community expanded, the team recognized the need for a name that better reflected their creative values and geographic roots. Based in Umeå, a city in northern Sweden, the studio drew inspiration from the local river Umeälven, which flows through the heart of the town and is visible from the windows of their office. This connection to place and nature led to the adoption of the name Cold River Games, a reference to both their environment and the enduring flow of creative ideas.
Crypto Rogue Games Announces Rebrand
Although the name has changed, the initials CRG remain the same, preserving continuity with the studio's past while looking toward the future. The rebranding does not signify a change in direction but rather a refinement of identity as the team prepares for broader visibility in the gaming industry.
The studio emphasized that this change is also a way to build a clearer brand presence within the gaming community, particularly as the industry continues to expand across platforms and into areas such as web3, where identity and authenticity play a key role.
Cold River Games continues to develop Crystalfall, the studio’s upcoming title, which remains the central focus of its efforts. The game is expected to be released in late 2025 and is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
In a closing note, the studio extended appreciation to its community and partners, crediting their support as a key reason for the studio’s growth and continued progress. As Cold River Games moves forward under its new name, it remains committed to delivering a game experience rooted in both tradition and innovation.
