Code Vein II Exclusive Preview

Code Vein II expands on the mechanics of the original while establishing itself as a standalone action-RPG. The game retains the series’ Souls-like roots, offering challenging combat and intricate level design, but introduces new systems that allow for greater customization and strategic variety. Set in a world facing destruction, the game follows vampiric Revenants as they attempt to prevent a catastrophic event, using time travel to influence the past and shape the present.

Flexible Combat Systems

At first glance, Code Vein II resembles other Souls-like games, with weapons ranging from greatswords to gun-mounted bayonets, alongside the newly introduced dual blades. Players use light and heavy attacks, dodge, block, and parry, forming a familiar foundation. However, the game differentiates itself with the Formae system. Each weapon can equip four Formae, mapped to the face buttons and activated with R1. Formae are divided into Combat, Magic, and Support categories, offering offensive attacks, defensive maneuvers, and area-control effects. This system allows for highly personalized combat strategies.

Ichor remains the resource that powers Formae, replenished through Drain Attacks. These slower, deliberate strikes restore Ichor and deal significant damage. Jails, unique weapons designed for Drain Attacks, add another layer of customization. The hands-on preview demonstrated a variety of Jails, such as the Ogre claw, scorpion tail, and bat swarm, each with distinct applications depending on Blood Codes, which determine a character’s stats and playstyle. The combination of weapons, Formae, Jails, and Blood Codes creates a versatile combat experience that rewards experimentation.

Time Travel as a Core Mechanic

Code Vein II’s narrative revolves around preventing the Resurgence, a force threatening the world, by traveling 100 years into the past. The protagonist teams up with Lou, a Revenant capable of navigating time, to alter key historical events. The preview started on MagMell Island in the present, moving back to its past state, which was under siege by bandits. This dual-timeline structure allows players to see the consequences of actions in different eras, affecting both story progression and combat scenarios.

Levels such as the Sunken Pylon highlight this structure, presenting environmental hazards, hidden rewards, and optional fights. The design encourages exploration, with shortcuts and checkpoints reminiscent of other Souls-like games, but with the added narrative context of time-travel consequences.

Partners and Assimilation Mechanics

Partners remain a central feature, assisting in combat and providing tactical support. They can distract enemies, help control groups of foes, and revive players when health reaches zero. Code Vein II introduces assimilation, allowing players to temporarily fuse with a partner to gain a stat boost while the ally leaves the field. This mechanic can be used strategically to perform high-power moves before returning the partner to combat. Partner interactions are integrated into the story as well, with certain dungeon sequences, like the Sunken Pylon, exploring the personal narratives of allies such as Josée.

Challenging Boss Encounters

Boss fights in Code Vein II remain a core element of the experience, requiring timing, positioning, and careful observation. The Metagen Remnant demonstrated this with its large health pool and heavy attacks, emphasizing the importance of stagger mechanics to open opportunities for Drain Attacks. Another encounter involved Josée, a former ally transformed into a corrupted, armored warrior. Her fast attacks and status effects demand constant movement and careful attack timing, reinforcing the strategic depth of combat. These battles highlight how the game balances difficulty with the versatility offered through Formae, Jails, and partner mechanics.

Narrative Choices and Consequences

Time travel extends beyond combat, allowing players to influence the fates of characters. After critical boss fights, players may have the option to revisit past events and alter outcomes, such as saving Josée from corruption. These choices could impact the broader mission, suggesting branching consequences and replay value tied to the story’s timeline.
