In a dramatic conclusion to Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live, Chinese developer Game Science revealed Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the highly anticipated follow-up to the breakout hit Black Myth: Wukong. The closing trailer featured a striking image of Zhong Kui riding a giant tiger, leaving the audience buzzing with anticipation.

The announcement came at the very end of Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, with host Geoff Keighley saving it as the final surprise. The trailer depicted Zhong Kui on the back of a tiger, accompanied by ominous imagery that highlighted the game’s darker tone. Though the footage did not reveal gameplay, the cinematic impact was more than enough to spark conversations both online and at the event itself.

A Project in Progress

Despite the polished trailer, Game Science was quick to remind players that the project is still in its early stages. Developers described it as “little more than an empty folder,” signaling that the reveal was more about sharing intentions than showcasing progress. The choice of timing, August 20, was not accidental. The studio explained it is a tradition to provide players with an update around this date, reinforcing its dedication to open communication with the community.

Future Plans Ahead

Currently, there is no release date. Even creative director Yocar admitted he has “absolutely no idea” when the game might be ready, noting that the team has yet to finalize the outline for both story and gameplay. What is certain, however, is that Game Science intends to move beyond simple expansions for Wukong. The decision to create an entirely new title instead of DLC underscores the team’s ambition to push the series into uncharted territory.

Legacy and Context

The reveal of Zhong Kui comes almost exactly one year after Black Myth: Wukong captured global attention. Released in 2024, Wukong sold millions of copies and set a new standard for Chinese-developed AAA titles. With its stunning visuals and challenging combat, it quickly became a benchmark for the genre. Many fans had expected additional content or DLC, especially after cryptic teasers earlier this summer. Instead, Game Science chose to chart a new path with a brand-new mythological adventure.
