Best Selling Games of 2025

GameDiscoverCo’s year-end data offers a clear picture of which new PC and console games resonated most with players in 2025. Covering the period from January 1 through mid-December, the report tracks performance across Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, and Nintendo Switch. The results point to a year dominated by major AAA releases, a noticeable rise in cooperative “friendslop” titles, and continued space for smaller or genre-specific projects to find an audience.

Steam’s Standout Performers and Emerging Trends

On Steam, R.E.P.O., PEAK, and Battlefield 6 lead the field in terms of units sold. One of the defining patterns of the year is the prominence of multiplayer-focused friendslop games. Alongside the top sellers, titles such as Schedule I, RV There Yet?, and Mage Arena all reached the top 20, highlighting sustained interest in cooperative experiences.

Large-scale action RPGs also performed consistently well on PC. Games like Monster Hunter Wilds, Elden Ring Nightreign, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered all secured strong positions. At the same time, Steam’s charts showed room for less conventional genres. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reached the top 10, while Dispatch, a visual novel, placed within the top 20. Every game in Steam’s top 20 sold more than 2 million copies, with the top seven exceeding 5 million, though lower average pricing played a role in these totals.

Revenue Leaders on PC

When ranked by revenue rather than units, Battlefield 6, Monster Hunter Wilds, and ARC Raiders sit at the top of Steam’s 2025 chart. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 followed closely, reinforcing its strong overall performance. GameDiscoverCo estimates that each of the top 20 games earned more than $50 million in gross revenue on Steam, with 13 titles surpassing $100 million.

Notably, new free-to-play releases failed to break into the top 20 by revenue this year. While titles such as Umamusume: Pretty Derby and Where Winds Meet showed some traction, their results fell short compared to leading premium releases.

Console Sales and Platform Differences

PlayStation’s rankings show a stronger appetite for sports titles than Steam’s charts. Soccer, basketball, American football, baseball, and Formula 1 games all appear among the platform’s most-played new releases. Major cross-platform AAA titles, including Battlefield 6, Monster Hunter Wilds, Elden Ring Nightreign, Split Fiction, and ARC Raiders, performed well on both PlayStation and PC.

First-party PlayStation exclusives such as Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach also saw strong adoption, alongside former competitor exclusives like Forza Horizon 5. According to GameDiscoverCo estimates, every title in PlayStation’s top 20 sold more than 1 million copies, with several exceeding 3 million and four crossing the 5 million mark.

Xbox Performance and Market Gap

Xbox Series S|X charts largely mirror PlayStation’s rankings, with additional sports titles like PGA Tour 2K25 and CarX Street appearing in the top 20. On Xbox, the top 10 new paid games sold more than 1 million copies, while the top 20 exceeded 300,000. Despite this, the overall gap in sales volume between Xbox and PlayStation remains significant.

Game Pass Dominance and Subscription Success

On Xbox Game Pass, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stands out as the most downloaded game of 2025, not just among third-party releases but across the service as a whole. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered followed closely behind. The top 20 list includes nine titles from Microsoft’s internal studios, and all entries are estimated to have surpassed 1 million downloads, with some approaching 5 million.

Nintendo Switch’s Distinct Audience

Nintendo Switch rankings in Western markets reflect a different audience profile compared to other platforms. Eight of the top 20 new paid games were published by Nintendo itself, and only one sports title, MLB The Show 25, made the list. GameDiscoverCo estimates that the top third of these games sold close to 1 million digital copies, while the lower end of the chart averaged around 250,000.

The Scale of Game Releases in 2025

Beyond sales performance, 2025 was another record-setting year for sheer volume. Nearly 20,000 games launched on Steam alone, bringing its total catalog to more than 117,500 titles. Almost half of this year’s releases received fewer than 10 reviews, indicating the continued challenge of visibility. Nintendo Switch added more than 3,100 new titles, while PlayStation platforms saw over 1,300 releases. Xbox Series S|X had around 900 new games, a noticeable decline year over year. These figures include utilities and applications, meaning the actual number of games is slightly lower.
