Animal Crossing: New Horizons Free Update

Nintendo is bringing Animal Crossing: New Horizons to its next-generation console with an upgraded version set to launch on January 15. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition introduces several gameplay enhancements, while a free content update arriving the same day expands the experience for both new and existing players on Nintendo Switch.

The updated edition takes advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2’s improved hardware, offering 4K resolution in TV mode and smoother performance overall. It also introduces new control options, including mouse functionality via the right Joy-Con 2 controller, letting players arrange furniture and create Custom Designs with more precision. An in-game megaphone system makes use of the console’s built-in microphone, allowing players to call out to island residents directly.

Multiplayer Expansion and CameraPlay

Online play sees one of the biggest upgrades in this new version. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition supports up to 12 players in a single session, doubling the previous multiplayer limit. Friends can now visit and explore each other’s islands simultaneously, bringing more social possibilities to the familiar island life formula.

The game also adds a new feature called CameraPlay, which supports compatible USB cameras sold separately. This function allows players to see friends’ real-time reactions while they interact in-game, enhancing the multiplayer experience and adding a new layer of connection between islanders.

The upgraded edition will be available both digitally and physically for $64.99, while current Animal Crossing: New Horizons owners on Nintendo Switch can purchase a $4.99 paid upgrade pack. Pre-orders for the upgrade pack are live now on the My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop.

Free Update Expands Island Life

Launching the same day as the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, the free update introduces a range of new content that enriches daily island activities. One of the major additions is the Resort Hotel, a new area on the pier run by Kapp’n’s family. Players can decorate guest rooms, help manage visitors, and browse the hotel’s souvenir shop for exclusive furniture and clothing items.

The update also brings quality-of-life improvements. Resetti now offers a Reset Service to help players organize or refresh their islands. Home storage capacity has been increased significantly, supporting up to 9,000 items, including trees, shrubs, and flowers - making it easier to manage large-scale decorating projects.

Nintendo Switch Online Members Get Exclusive Perks

Players with a Nintendo Switch Online membership can access additional features, including the new Slumber Island mode. This feature allows members to design and save up to three different islands, collaborate with friends online, and even invite residents from their main island to new ones. It expands creative freedom for players who enjoy experimenting with new layouts and designs.

Collaboration content also plays a big part in this update. The game adds in-game Nintendo items like the Ultra Hand and retro consoles, which let players interact with select classic Nintendo titles. LEGO® furniture and décor items make their debut as well, alongside support for The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon amiibo, unlocking themed characters and items.

A Fresh Start for a Fan Favorite

Since its release in 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has remained one of Nintendo’s most popular titles thanks to its relaxing gameplay and steady post-launch updates. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and the accompanying content update continue to build on that foundation, offering both new technical upgrades and fresh creative opportunities for players. The game’s next chapter begins January 15, when both the upgraded version and free update go live worldwide.
