Elden Ring: Nightreign is built with co-op in mind, defaulting to three-player matchmaking for its core expeditions. But not everyone wants—or needs—backup. Whether you're looking to tackle bosses alone, avoid distractions, or just want to play at your own pace, the game includes a few simple ways to go completely solo.

You won’t need to jump through any major hoops to make it happen. From in-game expedition settings to toggling offline mode, here’s a quick breakdown of how to play Elden Ring: Nightreign solo across all platforms.

Elden Ring: Nightreign

Elden Ring: Nightreign is a 2025 roguelike action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game is a spin-off and prequel to Elden Ring, using many of its features and gameplay elements, and focuses on roguelike and cooperative mechanics. The game is available to play today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Starting a Solo Expedition

When you're in the Roundtable Hold—the central hub where you manage expeditions—you’re already playing solo by default. No one else can join you there, even if you’re online. The only place where you need to tweak settings is when you're about to launch an expedition.

To get started, walk up to the main table in the Roundtable Hold and interact with it to bring up the expedition menu. After selecting your mission, move from the “Target” tab over to the “Matchmaking Setting” tab. This menu is where you’d usually invite friends or use community matchmaking passwords, but you’ll also find the key setting for going it alone.

Look for the option labeled “Expedition Type” at the bottom of the interface. Use the arrow keys or controller inputs to switch it from “Multiplayer” to “Single player.” Once that’s done, you’re good to go. The game will remember this setting, so all future expeditions will stay solo until you change it back.

Queued for Multiplayer? Here’s What to Do

If you hit start before switching modes and end up in the matchmaking queue, don’t worry—it’s easy to cancel. Just head back to the table in the Roundtable Hold, open the expedition menu again, and select “Cancel Expedition.” No harm done, and you can relaunch the mission with the right settings.

How to Play Offline and Single Player Setting

If you want to avoid all online activity altogether, you can set Elden Ring: Nightreign to offline mode. Open the main menu, head to the System tab, and scroll to the Network section, marked by a globe icon. From there, switch the third option from the top to “Play offline.”

Even when playing offline, you’ll still need to manually set your expeditions to single player. If you forget and try to start a multiplayer expedition while offline, the game will prompt you with a warning, giving you a chance to go back and adjust the setting.

Playing Solo Across All Platforms

Whether you’re on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or PC, the solo play setup works the same way. Elden Ring: Nightreign makes it easy to control how you experience its world. Whether you're after a focused, no-interruption run or just want to challenge yourself without backup, the solo mode is just a few settings away. Elden Ring: Nightreign launched on May 30, 2025, and supports both solo and cooperative play across all platforms from day one.
