<p>Deadrop, formerly known as "Project Moon," is an upcoming game developed by Midnight Society. It is a Vertical Extraction Shooter (VES) that blends the level design of an arena shooter with the scale of a Battle Royale and the strategic gameplay of an extraction shooter. Players can compete for the best drops or try to extract with their life and gear. The game is being developed transparently by Midnight Society's team of industry veterans and the community. Deadrop is expected to be a AAA game.</p>

<p>In 2020.b, 40 years after the Climate Wars began, population and pollution levels have surged, leading to the construction of massive self-governed city-states called REFINER STATES. These towers extract toxins from the stratosphere and export a concentrated form, known as SPACE DUST, which is highly addictive to the surrounding urban population. The lucrative trade of DUST has led to competing factions of Skins and Syns occupying the REFINER STATES, fighting against the Cleaners who operate the towers in a constant struggle for resources and gear.</p>
<h2>Vertical Extraction</h2>
<p>Deadrop takes a unique direction towards the battle royale genre, identifying the game's genre as a Vertical Extraction Shooter. An extraction shooter is a player versus player versus environment raid game, similar to Escape from Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown. In this type of game, players keep any loot they acquire during a successful match, but lose all of their equipment if they die. The term "vertical" refers to the game being set in a high-rise structure.</p>

<p>According to a Midnight Society blog post, their primary gameplay objective is to combine the level design of arena shooters with the large-scale player count of battle royale games, along with the extraction-based gameplay mechanics found in games like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Each member of the Midnight Society possesses a distinct persona that is expressed through their VisorCortex, which also determines their rarity. In addition to their unique personality, Variants are equipped with exclusive armor, Call Signs, weapons, and backgrounds, making them unmatched in the world of Midnight Society. As night falls over The City, you approach your table and pick up your dark VisorCortex. With a magnetic force, you connect it to your visor's port, and it instantly comes to life, crackling with electric power. You put on the visor, and once again, you feel like your true self.</p>
<p>As a member of the Midnight Society, you will have a one-of-a-kind call sign and VisorCortex that you can call your own. By getting a Founder's Pass, you can enjoy a range of benefits that come with it. One of them is early access to game builds and weapon tests, allowing you to have a say in the development of the game. You will also have voting rights on game features, ensuring that your voice is heard.</p>

<p>DEADROP recently unveiled a teaser for a new game mode named Midnight Ride, which combines elements of car racing with shooter mechanics, offering a unique and thrilling experience. For their 2024 plans, the development team at DEADROP is shifting its focus towards more behind-the-scenes work, enhancing the game's visuals, implementing a quests and contracts system, and ensuring console certification to comply with rigorous release standards.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>How to Get Started</h2>
<p>Early access to Deadrop game builds during development, called Snapshots, was exclusively available to holders of the Founder Access Pass. While currently only available on PC, Midnight Society plans to expand support to Xbox and Playstation in the future.&nbsp;All the available Founder Passes have been taken, and those who own them have the option to trade their collection on the open marketplaces such as <a href="https://opensea.io/collection/founderaccesspass" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OpenSea</a>. Deadrop has recently launched the sale of "<a href="https://midnightsociety.com/drive#game-access-pass" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Driver Keys</a>," which are items that come in packages giving direct access to download the game, plus in-game items that will be tradeable soon. Alternatively, a separate item that provides game access is also available for purchase.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Snapshot V of Deadrop, the new first-person extraction shooter from Midnight Society and Dr. Disrespect, offers a unique extraction-style gameplay by implementing vertical tower map elements, player identification, and proximity chat into the extraction gameplay loop. Every three months, the team at Midnight Society releases a new build or Snapshot of the game, with the latest Snapshot V also being launched alongside a live event featuring Doc and Optic Gaming at their local esports stadium in Arlington, Texas. Similar to other games emerging in the web3 space, the team has decided to release the game publicly in this manner to "build in public" and effectively create an organic community while obtaining direct gameplay feedback on each build iteration.</p>

<p>The implementation of vertical tower map elements adds a new level of strategy and challenge to the game, as players must extract or navigate their way up to avoid a timed rising permafrost. The verticality of the maps provides a fresh perspective on the genre, setting Deadrop apart from other first-person shooters on the market. The combined compactness of the tower and multiple angles from above and below creates a "nowhere is safe" feeling when playing.</p>
<p>Another standout feature of Snapshot V is the player identification system, which helps players form an identity and team up with others in-game. Holders of the "Founders Pass" have a unique visor matching their PFP, identifiable from a distance, and these "Founders" also drop a Variant ID card with their gamer username on it upon death. For example, you can kill Dr. Disrespect in-game and extract his Variant ID card to forever flex that you bested the Doc at his own game.</p>

<p>Additionally, each variant spawns into the game with a unique outfit, so once you figure out your friend is wearing the red sweatshirt, you can easily see who not to shoot. This feature is particularly useful in battle royale extraction gameplay modes, as it allows players to quickly identify who they are teamed up with or fighting against and make informed tactical decisions.</p>
<p>The addition of proximity chat is another standout feature in Deadrop Snapshot V. This feature allows players to communicate with others in their immediate vicinity (about 20 meters), creating a more immersive and social gameplay experience. It also adds an extra layer of realism to the game, as players must be mindful of their surroundings and be careful not to give away their position by literally being on a constant hot mic. Mixed reviews have emerged regarding proximity, as it creates a desire to be quiet when most streamers are trying to maintain conversations with their audience. Everything from karaoke to war journalism interviews can be overheard on The Tower, while the team has also had to combat profanity and other moderation issues as expected.</p>

<p>While compared to the last Snapshot, the overall gameplay mechanics have definitely improved, they still feel slow and clunky at times. The movement mechanics are not as smooth as they could be, and it feels like a less polished attempt at remaking surfing found in CS:GO. Despite nailing the variety of gun types, the shooting mechanics lack the satisfying feel of other popular first-person shooters due to their incompleteness and missing melee option. Pro snipe clips are still popping up in the community, but we don't see this happening for other gun types. One of the most significant issues with Deadrop is the lack of content. The Tower map is set with no extraction location variety, so after collecting everything, there is little incentive to continue playing.</p>
<p>Overall, Deadrop Snapshot V offers a unique and exciting gameplay experience that sets it apart from other first-person shooters on the market. The implementation of vertical tower map elements, player identification, and proximity chat adds depth and innovation to the extraction-style gameplay loop, while the smooth and polished graphics and sound design create an immersive and engaging gaming experience. While there may be some minor issues with bugs and an inconsistent player base, these are common in pre-release versions of games and are expected to be addressed in future updates. A more complete build and match variety seems achievable, and hopefully, the Midnight Society team will rise above these challenges with Snapshot VI.</p>
