JRPGs have always been an attractive genre in gaming, with a lot of its popularity built up thanks to well-known games such as Final Fantasy and Pokemon. In web3, there hasn’t been a game that serves the genre right yet, and this is where Aurory steps in to fill the gap. Aurory features a unique art style and runs a turn-based game mode using creatures called Nefties. This Aurory guide will take you on a quick rundown of all the essential information you need to know about the game before jumping into the vibrant worlds of Antik and Tokané.
It is definitely going to appeal to a lot of people who have a limited amount of time but are looking for a fun game with strategy at the heart of its gameplay. The game offers a free to play option meaning there is no barrier of entry for those who want to start playing right away and try it out for themselves. However, there is also the opportunity to own the Nefties that you play with, as they are their own NFTs with their own variable stats.
When the match starts, you are loaded into a random map. Currently there are 5 different types of maps, one of these is randomly selected. Each map contains 4 types of tiles; Hype tiles, Bumper tiles, Wall tiles and normal tiles. A Nefty standing on a hype tiles receives 1-2 Hype, depending on the map. The Bumper tile launches the Nefty in the direction it is facing, and this jump can range from 1 to 4 tiles. Wall tiles cannot be entered and only certain Nefties can jump over or make use of these strategically. The normal tiles can be used by every Nefty and have no effect. As time passes on in a match, the playable area begins to narrow and this is shown through red lines through tiles. Standing on tiles with red lines at the end of a turn causes significant damage to your Nefty.
Nefties have six main stats: Health Points (HP), Attack (ATK), Initiative (INI), Defense (DEF), Ether Attack (EATK), and Ether Defense (EDEF). All free to play Nefties have these stats set at 40% which gives you a decent chance of climbing up the leaderboard, approx. 40% of the top 100 on the leaderboard use free Nefties only.
First, the Aurory guide will look at each Nefty individually, what they can do with their special abilities and how each stat can affect this. Secondly, we will look at different compositions of Nefties to form strategies and how this can affect the player’s gameplay style.
Currently there are 9 Nefties available with their abilities broken down below. Each Special ability costs Hype points which are gained either through standing on a hype tile or through other Nefties (Ally and Enemy) attacks, with basic attacks granting 1 hype pts, a special ability granting 2 hype pts, and ultimate abilities granting 3 hype points. Let's get a brief introduction into each of them
This is a tank at nature with high HP. Its passive allows you to push Nefties one tile forward and his first special ability stuns opponents using Stomp. It can also throw enemies back using Throwback and No Escape, which prevents enemies from leaving tiles adjacent to Dino. His ultimate ability, Bulldozer, charges him in a straight line damaging a Nefty for every tile he moves them.
Stomp is the ability most used as it is a highly effective stun followed by No escape when there are Nefties that are out of the opponents range.
A ranged Aurory Nefty that has a passive attack which pushes other Neftys 1 tile away. Pressure Bomb, its first special ability, is a higher damage version of this and pushes enemies 2 tiles away, stunning them slightly. Defensive Dome is a purely defensive move that prevents damage to any Neftys inside the dome. Fate Swap is a unique, high cost move that allows you to swap HP and hype with another Nefty. Bubble Out is Axo’s ultimate ability teleporting, every Nefty within a 3x3 range to a designated spot. The abilities that are mainly used are either Pressure bomb or Defensive Dome due to the strategical effect they can have whilst Fate swap is also heavily used in 1v1 situations.
An Aurory cat character with a passive, which stacks his basic attack every time you use one of its’ special abilities. The first is being Backline Drop that hops over obstacles and attacks Nefties if he lands behind them. The second is Clash Stance which is a defensive move making Bitebit retaliate for every physical attack dealt to him. Thirdly, Bitebit can use Life Drain that takes HP from the enemy that he then gains. Lastly, he has Bouncing Claws as an ultimate ability allowing him to jump on multiple enemies dealing damage to them.
Bitebit’s most used abilities are Backline Drop and Bouncing Claws as Backline drop is an efficient way to stack his basic attack through his passive and the same with Bouncing claws as it can give 3 stacks in 1 use. A bitebit with many stacks of its passive is able to finish opponents reasonably quickly.
Another ranged Nefty with its passive ability which dodges every 4th attack that is directly dealt to Dipking whose first special ability is Ether Blast. This is currently its highest damage dealing ability, followed by Tank Blast which is meant to deal damage proportionate to the enemy’s HP. However, Ether blast costs only 1 hype more and deals about 50~ more damage, so it is more effective when used. Dipking’s ability that Dipking has is Dodge that evades the next direct attack. The ultimate ability for this Nefty is called Combo Breaker, it deals damage to all Nefties that are in the next two tiles beside Dipking.
Dipking’s most used abilities are Ether blast for its high damage output and Dodge due to the damage avoidance closely followed by Combo Breaker when enemies are low and also in range.
An Aurory unicorn style Nefty which has high mobility and with its’ passive ability leaves behind a inspire field that allows another Nefty to move again if it steps onto the tile. Its’ first special ability is called Rainbow Flash, it makes Unika dash 5 tiles in one direction damaging all Nefties in its path. The second ability is Come & Play (C&P), this charges Unika in one direction and damages the first Nefty in its’ path and also throws it over Unika. The third ability Unika can use is Kickback and this kicks the enemy Nefty behind Unika. Unika’s ultimate ability is called Encore allowing Unika to use the previous ability again.
Unika’s most used abilities are Come & Play and Encore, this is due to C&P causing the most damage from all special abilities and Encore allowing you to use the ability again with a 25% damage buff, it also has a low hype point need. A Unika with a lot of hype points is every player’s worst nightmare.
Everybody’s favourite dog with the passive ability allowing it to go ‘berzerk’ as ally Nefties loose health. The first special ability is called Shout Born that pushes enemies 3 tiles back, then you have Bodyguard, this protects allies if they are attacked as it stops the attack before hitting your ally. The third special ability is Ground Control allowing Shiba to hop to anywhere in a 3x3 radius. The ultimate ability, Big Bark, throws enemy Nefties 3 tiles away whilst only throwing ally Nefties 1 tile.
Players that use Shiba a lot tend to use Bodyguard and Shout born the most as Bodyguard also deals damage when stopping an attack and Shout born from a strategically standpoint of pushing the enemy over walls.
The only healer type Nefty in Aurory Tactics at the moment, with a passive ability leaving a healing tile in all tiles directly next to it. The first special ability, Life Force, grants an ally Nefty HP by sacrificing some of its own HP. Then you have Appease Feelings which reduces an enemies hype pts by 3 and reducing its attack and defence stats, followed by Roots Embrace which roots the opponent for 1 turn but also improves the defensive stats of that Nefty whilst rooted. The ultimate ability is Vitagreens, which heals the entire team whilst also giving a boost in Initiative for allies moving them up the timeline.
Block Choy’s most used abilities are Life Force and Vitagreens as they are the most effective in healing and have low Hype needs.
The neighborhood's not so friendly ghost, carrying a passive ability that marks Neftys with passession. Number 9 has to move through enemies to be able to attack and use special abilities on them. The first special ability is Scarring Strike, which reduces the defenses of an enemy Nefty and slows it, limiting the movement to 1 tile. Secondly you have Pulltergeist that can be cast to pull an enemy 4 tiles towards Number 9. Then we have Soul Conduit, allowing Number 9 to teleport to a desired place on the map. If he teleports to where a Nefty has died, he is able to cast a special ability and move one more time. Lastly we have Jumpscare, this ultimate ability hurts every marked Nefty directly next to Number 9 and stuns them whilst also healing Number 9. This move can be very powerful especially if Number 9 is low on health and the enemy has all Nefties close together.
The special abilities most used by Number 9 are Scarring Strike and Jumpscare as Scarring strike can allow the next two Nefties to finish the marked opponent and Jumpscare as its’ stun and damage are really effective.
This is Aurory's bird with highflying damage and incredible mobility. When attacked, the Nefties directly next to Zzoo are also damaged for a small amount due to Zzoo’s passive. Its’ first ability is called Attack & Back that allows Zzoo to attack an enemy and retreat 4 tiles directly behind him. Secondly we have Sharp Gust, which sends a wind in one direction in the length of 4 tiles, pushing enemies back by 1 tile and slightly stunning them. Then we have Overtake, this allows Zzoo to negate the next physical attack and fly over the enemys’ heads, it also allows Zzoo to take the very next turn after the attack. Zzoo’s ultimate ability, Sky Drop sends it high into the sky and dropping later onto a desired tile, also allowing him to move afterwards and perform another attack.
The most used abilities for Zzoo are Attack & Back and Overtake and the ultimate ability as they all have very great situational advantages.
