Marathon takes place on Tau Ceti IV, a lost colony with a mysterious history. In 2472, the UESC Marathon colony ship left Mars to establish a new settlement, but after 300 years, contact with its 30,000 colonists was lost. By 2893, Runners, a group of bio-cybernetic scavengers, arrive to investigate the derelict colony. Players assume the role of these Runners, navigating a hostile environment filled with rival scavengers, security forces, and unpredictable terrain. The gameplay focuses on survival extraction, requiring players to gather resources, complete contracts, and manage risk during each expedition. Missions culminate in encounters with the derelict Marathon ship orbiting the planet, adding a sense of ongoing mystery to the setting.
